I am having a similar issue as well. I can log on to cox webmail but I can not re-establish accounts on my iPhone or iMac. I am very frustrated! It keeps telling me incorrect user name/password - but it's not!!!!!

Since cox isn't any help to me I have kept my original email, established a new Gmail address and have all emails that do come in automatically forwarded to new email address..just did this today..working great so far..definitely a Cox issue they aren't admitting to..

I have this issue as well. And resetting my password and re-establishing the email settings from both MS Outlook (Win7) and Android worked one time, then only a half hour later it was giving me the same error message. I know it is not an issue with my password, because I can log in to webmail through my IE browser. But not using Outlook or Android.
What is strange is that I have several Cox email addresses on my account and only one is having this issue. And it is not the master account id. This is the account that I use most, so I am in a lot of "pain".
Any other suggestions?

We found many email address that were compromised and changed the password to secure the account. I suggest changing the password once more to one you haven't used before. Once this is completed, I suggest deleting the email profile in your device and adding it back as new using the settings Tiffany gave earlier. If the issue continues, please note all the settings your device is asking for and post them here. I will let you know what to put for each one.

StephanieA, the others above are correct, and simply changing the password and/or deleting the account and re-installing it is not the solution. I've spent 2-3 days with Cox support going through this and it is not the solution. I've managed to cheat around it a few times to get it working but it only lasts for a few hours.

Hi timjd,
You state her account works on other device. What type of device isn't it working on and do you get an error message or icon?

I tried changing password on devices and it didn't work..I had to change password on my desktop delete all device email accounts and install them again with new password and I am currently having no problem getting emails on my desktop and 3 devices..fore the only thing that worked was changing password at host...but cox forgot to tell me that part. .Thank goodness for these forums

Hello StephanieA. Thanks for the reply.
Her iPhone is working for incoming and outgoing mail.....no problems.
Her webmail is fine. I can go on the cox website, log in to her account and send and receive emails off her account.
Her Mac desktop computer is the one that won't process outgoing email. We get an error dialogue box that comes up and says it can't connect to smtp.cox.net.....and references bad user name or password. Which of course makes no sense when it's the same user name and pw that works on her phone, webmail, and inbox.
Like I said yesterday I was able to tweak it by turning authorization off, and it actually worked for about 8 hours.

timjd,
Since the desktop isn't mobile, you don't have to use authentication. That service is for when you are off the network and want to send. I suggest changing the settings to Custom Port 25 (The default doesn't seem to work all the time), taking out the user name and password, and don't check Use SSL. Let me know if this helps.

Thanks Steph.....the suggestions you provided did in fact work last night (March 12). We'll see if it holds up. The question that begs asking is why would the previous settings generally work fine for the last 10+ years (actually, I've been a Cox customer for 19 years!), but last week require me to make custom settings that are NOT per Cox setup instructions? None of this came up with calls/chats directly with Cox Tech Support either.
I wonder if others are having the same problem but can't find their way to this forum to get unpublished tips on fixing it?

ChrisL - good observation, and yes, there was a recent OS X update. The irony being in their description one of the fixes was defined as; "Resolves an issue that prevented Mail from receiving new messages from certain providers". I'm guessing they fixed it for Provider X at the expense of Provider Cox.
I hope Cox and OS X can get their stars aligned and work it out.

ChrisL - that's funny (not haha funny) because that is now the new problem we're having (on all our OS X devices). Now incoming isn't working without rebooting or exiting Mac Mail and re-opening. I probably incorrectly assumed this was a Cox issue - when it very well could have been an OS X issue - or Mac Mail more specifically. Regardless I hope Cox and Apple (Both being powerhouses in the industry) can get coordinated on this sort of thing.
