DVR/Cable Box Shuts Off Intermittently

I just had my cable installed less than a week ago. Everything is fine with it except for the fact that the cable box randomly shuts down. I power it up right away and it goes back to what I was watching, but it's particularly annoying. Sometimes it will shut off once every 10 minutes a few times. Other times it will go a few hours before shutting down. Any ideas?

When you say "shut down" could you give more detail? Is it like it's losing power? Or like what would happen if someone pressed the off button? Or is it closer to the reboot process that happens when Cox reboots your box?

If it seems to be losing power, I would check what you have it plugged into for electricity and that the electrical cord is connected firmly at both the socket and the back of the box.

It doesn't lose power. It is as if someone hit the off button. When I turn it back on it goes right back to the channel I was watching.

Interesting. If you put something in front of the box (like a book), so to block the remote control sensor, does it still happen? Sometimes different light sources, like certain like bulbs or lamps, or even some sensors on the TV itself, can be picked up accidently by the box as a remote signal.

Also, could you explain how you turn it back on? Do you press the button on the box? Do you press cable then power on the remote?

It still happens with the sensor blocked and to turn it back on I press cable and then power on the remote.

What model cable box is it? Maybe it has a power save mode, or at least a power save mode that is malfunctioning.

Another possibility is it's a switched digital video (SDV) channel. If so, after a certian period of time, the channel will actually stop broadcasting and not turn back on until it detects a signal from your box. Next time it happens try Cable then channel up or down.

With SDV, the "box" simply switches to a non SDV channel, usually VOD. It doesn't shut off.

Is this possibly a thermal shutdown? What model is the "box"? Is it in a semi-enclosed area?
