The good news:
I've been enjoying the few locations with Cox Wifi installed. The system remembers your MAC across all locations, so once you've logged in (with your Cox account), you are instantly recognized at any of the other Wifi routers.
The bad news:
At home, my Wifi is encrypted - because the Cox TOS says I can't share the bandwidth. While reasonable, I'd like to make it available for neighbors and passers by. Some devices (especially those based on a certain Broadcom pci device revision) work much better with unencrypted wifi.
The solution:
Dear Cox, I would like to purchase and install a Wifi router controlled by your Cox Wifi system. Then, anyone with a Cox account could use it (which is most neighbors and passers-by). Furthermore, this would extend the covered area for Cox wifi at minimal cost. Hopefully, the router software is based on open firmware (e.g. OpenWRT).

Thanks for the suggestion, it is not currently planned to sell our Metro Wifi services to the home but I can certainly pass the feedback for it along as we continue to expand it further.

The idea is that if I could somehow restrict people using my Wifi to cox account holders, then I wouldn't need to encrypt it. Buying and using an official Cox Wifi router (or official firmware for popular openwrt/tomato compatible routers) is one way to accomplish that.
