Constantly Losing Internet Connectivity

For about three weeks we have been having internet connection issues and it seems to be worsening. Several times a day a device (laptop, phone or tablet) will hang. I have to power down the modem and then power it back up. For the past 5-6 days, every single morning requires me to power down the modem. I stream a lot of videos and such and have noticed within the past couple weeks that no matter what I'm watching it hangs several times - extremely frustrating. Prior to this, I've had little to no complaints about my internet.

This gets to be particularly irritating when I'm remoted in to my work computer and lose the connection.

I copied and pasted info from my modem (it looks good in the editor, but when I preview it seems to lose the table formatting - so, not sure how easy it will be to read):

Please help.

Hi mirlisa,

That can be frustrating having to reset the modem every day.  When you notice that you do not have connection do you see any lights that are out or blinking on the modem that normally do not behave that way?  I was able to pull up the modem information I am not seeing any visible problems with the signal levels.  Do you use wireless connections or do you have something that is plugged in directly to the modem (or router if you have one)?

Hi Derrick,

Generally the lights don't change when I lose the connection. Only one time did I notice that all lights went out except for the power light - it appeared at that time to spontaneously reset - but this seemed to be the exception that I can tell.

I do use a wireless router and it is connected via an ethernet cable. During one of the connection interruptions, I did reboot the router but it didn't change anything and I ended rebooting the modem.

I did also connect to my laptop via a cable to the router to see if it was wireless related - but got the same connection issue.

Thanks,

mirlisa

One more thing I'd suggest to help further isolate the issue is to try testing the connection without the router to see if the issue persists.  Be sure to disconnect and reconnect power to the modem after otherwise the device connected won't be able to get a connection.

Thanks, Chris. I will try this and report back if the problem continues - may be a day or two before I can dedicate the time to do it.

To post a follow up - it seems my internet connection has dramatically improved. In the last week or so I have only needed to reboot my modem once. Not sure what changed unless it was on Cox's end as nothing on my end changed. For now I am happy to have an uninterrupted connection again.
