Cisco DPQ3212, 15 minutes to switch from Power to Battery Back-up

Yesterday, I had my ARRIS Telephone NIU swaped out to a Cisco DPQ3212 eMTA.

I was just testing the eMTA's ability to maintain a dial tone, by unplugging it, and there was no dial tone, yes I have a good battery. I rely on my phone for my alarm system.

I called Cox support and they said it takes 15 minutes to switch from power to battery before there is a dial tone again. Is this true?  Cox knew I had an Alarm System and did the rewire for the  line seizure to the Alarm panel.

If it truly takes 15 minutes to get a dial tone back, the customer should definitely be informed of that prior to a conversion from NIU to eMTA.

I was planning to switch my mother from Centurlylink to Cox HSI and Phone, but if her power goes out, and it does frequently, and she cannot use the phone for 15 minutes, she would loose her mind.

I  had a DPC3212 and the battery took over almost instantaneously. What kind of battery do you have inside? Also, what firmware are you running? Maybe the power transfer is causing a cable sync problem, causing the modem to need to reset, and maybe that's what is taking it longer for the battery to take over? If so, a manual reset after power loss may help expedite the situation.

It has the correct battery, and the green battery light is solid now, meaning it is fully charged. when first installed the green battery light was flashing, meaning it was charging.

It was also very odd that after I rebooted the eMTA the reported signal levels all dropped 5 to 6dB from where they were prior to me unplugging the eMTA, and have not gone back up. Prior to unplugging they were all -1 to -2db  after they are -5 to -6db and my download speed dropped from over 107Mbps to just 50-60Mbps

I received new firmware this morning
Bootloader Revision: 2.3.0_R1
Current Software Revision: d3200-P10-5-c1000r5593-150324a-COX
Firmware Name: d3200-P10-5-c1000r5593-150324a-COX.bin
Firmware Build Time: Apr 1 10:01:32 2015

Now the phone service is restored in 2 minutes, after power is pulled. Still seems like it should be an uninterrupted dialtone or as close as possible.

Hi Bryan,

I'm really glad that the firmware update reduced dial tone downtime. We can always swap your eMTA for a different model, if you like. Based on Health Edge's experience with the Cisco DPC3212, a different eMTA may be better suited to your specific need. Let us know how things go!

Hey Becky,

I do not think Cox has a different model DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 eMTA other than the Cisco DPQ3212

Do you know of one?  They had the Moto DOCSIS 2.0, but I have not seen an ARRIS/Moto DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 eMTA

I think my best bet is just to get a UPS for my office, I have been looking at getting one anyway

Hi bryaninphx, go to the Cox website and click on residential, support, phone, then search for modem. Check out the article on the Cisco DPQ3925. I hope this helps.

Mike,

Thanks for the response, I have no interest in a Modem/Router Combo.

If Cox had an ARRIS/Moto DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 or greater standalone eMTA I would be interested.

This eMTA randomly reboots, most every day, and when it re-syncs the reported signal levels are way off, down about 15dB from where they were before the reboot, It rebooted while I was on the phone today, cutting off my conversation.

After a reboot, it takes 10-15 minutes to get a dialtone back. Did I just get a faulty eMTA? This cannot be normal.
Also after a reboot my DL speeds drop from 100Mbps to less than 50Mbps, and the modem needs to be rebooted again to get the speeds back up to 100Mbps.

Any Ideas? My Moto SB6120 never had any issues.
Nor did my ARRIS outdoor telephone NIU.

This is after the Reboot, normally they are closer to 0 to -5dB

I have already had two Techs out to check signals replace the one splitter at the demarc, replace the main drop, signal levels are good they all say.

I have another tech scheduled for Monday, if they cannot fix it or replace the eMTA, with a good one.  I am requesting the conversion back to the outdoor NIU and Circuit Switched Phone service, If Cox will not cooperate, I will switch to Centurylink. for my phone service, maybe Internet too.

Cox Tech never showed up today, When I called in today I was told, the CSR I spoke with on Sat 6/13/15, did not ever schedule a Tech visit, she entered a customer install instead???  She was also quite rash and arrogant, if you wish to follow up with the Saturday call to Tech Support

Supposedly someone is coming out tomorrow, Tue 6/16/15

Contracted Tech showed up 2.5 hours after the 2 hr window w/ no call, received a $20 On-Time Guarantee Credit, that was nice.

Tech did not actually check any signals with a meter, only his smart phone, which only reports back what the modem reports, and only swapped out the eMTA. The new eMTA does show a 1 to 2dB increase over the old one.

I'll give this eMTA a chance and see what happens.  So far after rebooting the eMTA it is not showing a sharp drop in the signal levels that the old one did.

I also have a UPS now, so I do not have to worry about the telephone battery issues.
