Good evening, bought a new house and had my services transferred and added cable for the football season at the same time. Internet is working perfectly fine, however the cable service is having issues. A tech came out last week and said that it looked like someone had gouged one of the wires leading from the service box to the house. He recommended that I replace the feed from the side of the house into the living room, which I did(I have experience with cat3/5/6 AND coax running and termination from a previous job) as the existing wire was older. The temporary run and now newly done underground run have fixed the overall connection, however I'm still having troubles with the cable box not recognizing channels. I constantly get the channel off air screen on the cable box. Tonight I decided to run the wire straight to the TV and low and behold, I'm getting all channels without a problem or distortion. I wanted to verify that there is the potential that the box I received is defective and should take it back.
Thanks!
Mike

gravitysucks,
Typically the "Channel not Available" (and Temporarily Off Air) messages mean that the cable box is not detecting the signal it expects for the channel you are trying to view. Sometimes it occurs because there is no signal from the broadcaster, other times it can indicate a signal issue at the home or cable outlet the box connects to. This message can also mean that there is a problem with the box itself, but this is the less common cause. Based on your description of the events so far, I suspect the problem to be related to signal. While I am happy to hear that you are able to tune channels with the TV directly connected to the cable outlet, I don't want to rule anything out yet. The signal a used by a TV direct to the outlet will be different than what a cable box looks for. If a technician has not returned to your home since the underground drop was replaced, it may be necessary for one to come back to reassess things now that these repairs have been completed. Is this the only cable box in the home?
