My new rental modem (Netgear C6300BD) forces me to obtain DNS servers automatically from Cox. If I purchase my own cable would I be able to use a Dynamic IP address from Cox but specify my DNS addresses? I'm sure I would be able but would my internet service work properly?
Thanks in advance...

You can set OpenDNS in your DHCP scope. This is set in your router, not your modem.

I use Google's DNS for both IPv4 and v6, I set that up through my Windows settings though. I have an Arris SB6190.

The Cox issued gateways don't support this feature. Going with your own modem/router solution would work however depending on your setup you could also simply specify manual DNS entries on your client devices as a workaround.
