Arris TM602g

I read online that my current cable modem (Arris TM602G) is only a DOCSIS 2.0 and should be upgraded to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.  We currently have the Preferred Internet (50Mbps) on our account. Should we upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 or is our current modem enough to handle Preferred Internet?

Yes, the TM602g is a DOCSIS 2 modem, 1channel up & 1 channel down. It will never handle even Preferred speeds. The 602 is also a telephone modem, are you using it for phone? If so, you should be able to swap it at a Cox store for a DPQ3212 at no cost or monthly rental. Add a router with gigabit Ethernet @ wireless ac support & your good to go. Entry level routers, like the TP-Link C5 can be had for about $60, upgrads fromTP-Link,ASUS or Netgrear Nighthawk are available depending on budget & needs.

Yes, we're using it for both phone/internet.

Ask to be upgraded to a DPQ3212. I am surprised it already hasn't. It should be a totally free upgrade.
