Any news of Phoenix-area email problems? Starting last night

and continuing this morning, i am getting a "could not connect to the server" dialogue box. My Apply Mail icon on the desktop "bounces" to warn me of a problem (iMac).  I use POP... and get my email to my desktop.  Cox email has been excellent for years.  The dialogue box asks me to enter my password but entering it does not help.

I click on GET MAIL. I close the Mail.  Restart the computer. One of those things usually helps when i have this "connect to server" problem  ( it happens once a year or less).  Right now the mail is working again.  Just wondered if i am alone or if this is a Phoenix problem.

I am very happy with Cox telephone support but the hold time is often 5+ minutes and can sometimes be 20+ minutes.  I thought i would avoid the hold time and see if this forum had any input.

You are not alone.  I agree that Cox email has been excellent for years.  I'm in Orange County California, and yesterday afternoon I started having a problem that sounds very similar.  In my case, when I click on Get Mail, sometimes it just works, but often it gives me an error:

"Sending of password for user wub did not succeed. Mail server pop.cox.net responded: please send PASS command"

What I find odd is that if I deliberately enter a >bogus< password, I get an instant indication that the username/pw combination does not work.  But when i get the error above, it is after about a half a minute to a minute pause.

I held for 25 minutes for Cox support.  The tech (Tier 2) walked me thru all of my email settings.  He changed the incoming and outgoing server addresses..... removing "west" from pop.west.cox.net.  Also changed my Port setting from 25 to 465. Very nice guy.  As soon as i got off the phone and sent an email, i got the dialogue box again "server does not recognize my password".   Previously, entering my password did not help.  This time it let the email go out.  Of course, i don't want to have to enter my password for every outgoing email.

The technician said that the servers have had problems for 2-3 days. They have had to restart the servers. Which increases the chance for problems with email.

Hi Everyone,

When you get this message in your email client, do you go to webmail to see if you can sign in? Do you get the same message?

Same here pop.cox.net and pop.west.cox.net not responding.
Outgoing email smtp.cox.net seems to be working.

Using Win7 and Windows Live Mail

Webmail is receiving what I send via smtp from my PC.  But there is no response from the POP server.

Same problem here, southern Arizona. My email settings are correct but I am getting server not responding or password issue. Has been happening for two days on and off. My settings have not changed and I know they are correct--this is a Cox issue. I wish they would be forthcoming and admit when they have problems.

Stephanie, there is no problem logging into my webmail.  The technician was surprised when he had me check this out.

I'm in the Las Vegas NV area, and have been having these same error messages coming up the past two days.  (Using Windows Live Mail)

Glad to know it's not just my computer.  Wonder what's up?

Having problems with all clients, POP or IMAP in Palos Verdes area in SoCal. Getting error message that says "connection timed out" and on my mobile "cannot get email from IMAP server imap.cox.net.

Just started seeing this around 8pm PST. Have no problem if I log in via webmail. All clients non-functional

Beginning about 3 weeks ago, sporadically, emails sent to me have have taken anywhere from 2 hours to 3 days to show up.  I thought it might be my settings in Outlook or on my iPhone.  However, the emails are also not appearing in webmail. Spoke with level 2 technician, checked all my POP settings and everything is set up properly.  Still happening, yesterday I had 6 emails with delays of 2-8 hours.  Here's an example that I can't get my arms around. Made airline reservation with my email as contact. Also elected to have itinerary sent to my wife's email (also COX). She received email instantainiously Tuesday evening, mine showed up Wednesday evening.

Any suggestioins why this may be happening?  I have been using cox email for 10+ years, this is first time I've experienced it

Thanks TiffanyR for responding.  I followed your instructions and sent the email to Cox. I got a response from a Cox rep. She seemed annoyed with my question. She said she could not begin to help me with the information i provided.  She needed information about the type of computer i was using, etc.

I just let it drop.  The problem with email is gone.

Problem was gone yesterday but is back today.  I understand that 'maintenance' was done last night.  Tech support is acting like the 3 Stooges on this, nobody seems to admit that thewre is a problem.  I can't believe that they don't know since so many are complaining.  Maybe the geeks are just not telling the CSRs.

I live in Phoenix and have had the same problem for a few weeks. I have tried several things on my end to no avail. I completely removed and reinstalled my Thunderbird email client, including the Profile. I created an IMAP account, switched back to a POP account and I still receive an intermittent error stating " Login to server pop.cox.net failed." I can receive mail most of the time, however, the problem pops up often and I end up shutting the mail client down and restarting it in order to receive mail. I am convinced the problem is with the Cox mail servers.

I have had issues for going on two months with their POP and IMAP servers in Orange County.  Authentication fails on a consistent basis, prompting for passwords (while I was using POP) or taking my IMAP folders offline.  My client is configured absolutely correctly and my connectivity is solid.  Is there any explanation on the Cox team as to why their auth services are failing?
