TV Box options for Cloud DVR

I currently have Cox Internet with the Panoramic Gateway and Cloud DVR service. I use an XG2 as my TV box, and it has always been horribly slow to interact with. I don't use it that much, and lately, when I switch to it on my TV, it is sometimes coming up with a black screen, and I have to reboot it, which takes forever. Is there an alternative box? I know about the various apps, but they don't support pausing and rewinding Live TV, which is nice to have.

Hello barreleye,

I am sorry to learn of your recent troubles. We want you to enjoy the services!  There may very well be an issue with the signal level or receiver.  Please send us an email with your account details to cox.help@cox.com so that we can review your equipment diagnostics.

Thanks, but I want to know about alternative boxes. Like I said, the XG2 has always been horribly slow to interact with, and I've had it for years.

barreleye,

There are quite a few options, for example, there is the Xi6, XG1v3, or the XiD to name a few.  Depending on your service level there are other options.  Customers are always welcome to take the equipment to one of our retail locations and swap it out.  Based on what you mentioned, I would recommend having a technician come out to inspect prior to swapping out any equipment to avoid overlooking an underlying issue.  Feel free to visit https://www.cox.com/residential/support/contour-wireless-xi6-receiver.html for details on Contour equipment.

First off, I've been given wrong information before by store personnel and have been given the right information here, so that's why I'm asking here.

I was told by two stores the XG2 has to be connected to coax for the IPTV boxes to work at all. I was told it was impossible to swap the XG2 for one of the small streamer boxes (e.g. the Xi6), because Cox's system won't permit them to do it. I was only offered the option of adding one of the boxes for an additional $10/mo. I was told a lot of people are complaining about this XG2 requirement.

My goal would be to replace the XG2 with an Xi6, but I wanted to try the Xi6 first to see if it's better. Unfortunately, they said I would not be able to return the XG2, but that I must keep it and if necessary, plug it into an unused outlet, and the Xi6 would remain on my account as an additional $10/mo charge.

Is this correct? If not, who would I talk to, because the store personnel refused to do it.

Hi ,

We are not currently aware of an issue with the Xg2 box being slower or having a specific issue that replacing it with a different model will correct. Every time you change or press a button on the remote, a signal is sent over the network, then back to the box before the change occurs. What you are describing could be a signal issue. We would like to take a look at the cable boxes' signal levels to see if there is an issue that may be causing slow responses. Please email us at cox.help@cox.com. Please be sure to include your name, full street address, and a link to your forum posts.

Please ignore everything I said about the XG2 performance. Let me restate the only question I have.

Does Cox have any TV box that functions like devices that run the Contour app, such as iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and the web browser on my PC? These devices get their TV directly from the Internet. Again, the major missing feature from the apps is the inability to pause/rewind Live TV, which I was doing in 2018 with YouTube TV.

When I look up the Xi6:

https://www.cox.com/residential/support/contour-wireless-xi6-receiver.html

I find the specs say:

  • Supports up to a 30-minute pause, rewind, and fast forward of live TV

Great! That solves the weakness in the apps.

The only requirement is:

  • The Panoramic Wifi Gateway must be installed and the internet working prior to connecting the receiver.

There is nothing there about the XG2.

Why can't I replace the XG2 with the Xi6?
