Wireless Contour Stream Player (Cox TV) usage is being counted towards my Data Usage

I realized today that Cox is counting my Contour wireless usage (Cox cable TV) towards my Data usage cap. Got an alert yesterday that I have used 75% of my data and I still have 10 more days left in the monthly cycle. I had just installed Google Nest Wifi couple of weeks ago, so now I have more detailed wireless stats available to me than just the Cox Data Usage meter. Using Google Wifi app, I can see that over half of my data usage is attributed to "Arris" device which is my Cox TV stream player. I have been repeatedly told by Cox that watching Cox TV either by the wireless stream player or using Contour app on a mobile device DOES NOT count towards my data usage. Cox website also states that the following Cox-provided services do not count towards your monthly data plan:

• Watching live or On Demand content via the Contour app
• Watching On Demand content via a Cox HD receiver or Cox DVR
• Watching Cox On Demand for TiVo
• Cox Digital Telephone services
• Cox Homelife services

Called Cox today, got thru after 45 minutes, spoke to the agent, got put on hold as she researched (she said she will call me if we got disconnected), she got back and as soon she she started saying "thanks for waiting, I looked at everything…".  the line went dead. Waited 10 minutes, no call back

Posting my issue here to see if anyone else has had similar issue and also to get Cox's attention.

Will try calling Cox again today or tomorrow.

Yes it is, according to Cox. For Cox TV, I am using Cox provided wifi streaming box because I don't have a cable outlet where my TV is. Cox confirmed when I first got this about a year ago (and since then) that using this wifi box for TV does not count towards my data usage. Same is true (according to Cox), for watching TV via Contour app on my mobile device.

free data huh, what a dream!

i've been with cox for 20+ years, have always had some data cap. used to be 500, then bumper to 1024.

is mobile device using wifi or network data?

You are correct, there is a data cap which is 1.25 TB now. That applied to all other usage like surfing the net, downloading, streaming other services like Netflix, Apple TV, etc., I am talking about watching Cox cable TV via their wifi streaming player. As for mobile device, if you Contour app via wifi, per Cox it is not counted towards your data usage.

haha very optimistic.

More likely it just counts all data upstream and downstream without regards and since then, they changed the datacaps from 1.0 tb to 1.24 tb, and, by the way, cox did have a datacap this whole time, but only when I moved back to california did they ever enforce it. I was sure surprised. I would blow way over it in the midwest and no one cared.

how does it tell it's contour-?

cox hsi IS cable, so if it's going through the streaming box, it might be dinging you on it

maybe download glasswire, specifically set router settings and disconnect other things while testing some high fidelity video. see if a couple hours -> raises it the expected amount

"More likely it just counts all data upstream and downstream without regards", Sadly  that's what it seems like. After wasting over an hour on the phone with Tech Support and then Tier2, no resolution. I am told "who told you Contour2 (Cox's wireless cable box) usage doesn't count towards data cap... oh you were given wrong info, etc." TIer 2 even said that using Contour app via mobile device count towards data. And when I referred to the Cox website statement, then she said oh she misunderstood and that using Contour app does not count.

Felicityc- you are right, how can they tell if I am using Contour app on my device to not count it towards my data cap.

So frustrating.

Cox didn't increase their data cap.  Cox uses "TB" (terabyte) to express data cap but technically it's a TiB (tebibyte).  Data Cap assumes storage.  A byte measures storage.  1 byte equals 8 bits.  If you do the math, it's 1.1 TB…or 1 TiB.  It's kinda in the weeds but I doubt Cox will charge you for less than 1.1 TB.

I've always understood watching regular TV programming with the Wireless 4K Stream Player does not count towards your data cap.  Here's a post of a moderator (Becky) distinguishing between data caps for regular TV content and streaming through the Contour streamer.

Wow! Thank you Bruce for your reply and the post link.

@DustinP - Thoughts?

Cox also insists the Wireless 4K Stream Player must use Panoramic.  I assumed (again) Panoramic could therefore distinguish...and perhaps encapsulate...regular TV programs as "uncounted" Internet packets.

Another poster, however, claims the Stream Player works on a non-Panoramic modem/router.  He said he'd monitor his data cap but nothing yet.

Interesting. This may be getting a bit over my head but I think I know what's going on with my setup. After miserabe failure of Cox pods to strengthen my wifi signal, I bought Google Nest wifi. After initial setup, I had two separate wifi networks; one from Pano and the other from Google router. I then enabled the bridge mode for the Pano Admin console to avoid having two different wifi networks. Now my only wifif network was controlled by Google Home. It think this may be my issue as Cox is now considering all data as streaming/data usage as oppose to excluding Contour 2 data from the cap. This may explain why my usage has gone up in the last 2 weeks (which is when I installed Google wifi) .

Sure! Give me test scenario(s) to run and I'd be happy to do some. I did confirm yesterday that my overall usage including Contour 2 was the same for Google and Cox Data tracker. This tells me that Cox is counting my regular TV usage towards my cap. I use Contour 2 only for regular cable TV and use Apple TV for all other streaming. I unplugged Contour 2 yesterday and noticed this morning that my dat usage is considerably less (about 40GB vs 75GB) as compared to past few days, according to Cox Data Tracker.

I disabled the bridge mode late yesterday. Will use regular Cable TV normally today and check if the data usage spikes up again.

The problem is Cox refuses to produce an app.  In the day of SmartTV sets and streamers, Cox is forcing us to wire an antiquated box in our houses.  My router, TV and Roku already have Internet connectivity; however, if I want to watch cable TV, I need to wire another device onto the connection.  An app can do this.  If you want cable TV, you need a box.  If you need a box, you need to rent it.  If you need to rent it, Cox gets more cha-ching.

wifi isn't a freebie, it's using the 1tb data.

Yeah....a moderator confirmed live cable-TV would count against your cap.

Because of this, I don't know what the incentive is to get a Wireless 4K Contour Stream Player (phew!).  W4KCSP

You have a W4KCSP?  Do you watch live cable-TV on it?  Meaning, if the Red Sox are beating the Stankees on the CBS broadcast channel, you can watch it on channel 9 (or whatever is CBS in your town of Huckleberry)?

i bought two 55" samsungs 3 years ago, turns out one had a bad screen.

tv's were 4k capable. under warranty, a tech came out/swapped the screen + showed me a 4k presentation on usb.

colors/detail were so much better than regular cox tv but none of the local stations were doing 4k.

live diamondback baseball is great, even with cox tv, put up on fox sport channel in hd.

i select only hd presentation with the contour tv guide.

It seems like it has almost doubled the usage amounts for everything in the past 4 months you used to be have unlimited with everyplan I was granfathered in but because I upgraded my net speed they said you lose your unlimited data plan they charge you for everything you need wifi for it makes no sense.
