Adding Mesh extensions

I just got a panoramic Cox router but it’s installed in a closet. I purchased the nighthawk mesh WiFi boxes and want to connect them. I heard it’s as easy as just plugging them in and syncing but it’s not working that well. Has anyone had luck connecting/syncing  their mesh devices to their router or is there some kind of bridging that needs to be turned on or off?
