Signed up for cox internet a little over a month ago. While I am happy with my speed, I am NOT happy with the CONSTANT error above. I have the Cisco dpc3825. Connected to it is ONE pc (wirelessly), 1 hardwired tv and 1 ps3.
What happens is, the pc will lose the connection, a windows pop up with the error comes up. the browser will then show a "You are now conncted to a network" message, and give a suggestion to "check cables" "restart router" etc. running the "troubleshooter does not help. usually the only remedy is to reboot the modem. restarting the pc does not solve it. However, sometimes, the connection will "refresh" in a few seconds - if it doesn't then i'll need to reboot the modem.
the windows pop up says "another computer on this network is using the same ip address as this compter.....". Again, there is only ONE pc connected. the tv is on, the ps3 is off. Is there a setting in the modem/router I am missing?? this is getting beyond frustrating! never had this issue with my dsl.
this is inconvenient as the router is downstairs, and I have to run down everytime to restart it since I lose the ability to even log into the modem from the pc. i can't seem to duplicate the problem on demand. the wired devices (ps3, tv) don't have this issue.
any suggestions to try? i have factory-resetted the modem already.

I would try setting up DHCP reservations for each device. See page 32 of this manual. Might not fix the problem but will atleast get rid of the symptoms. Also see page 59 on how to check the log of the router.

Do you have any other wireless devices you can test? Have you experienced this issue with any other wireless devices. This type of issue would require some extra troubleshooting steps that involve logging into the router and seeing which MAC addresses are being assigned the same IP address. Also, make sure your network is secure with a passphrase (if it isn't already).

Hello Derrick,
I do have other wireless devices, however, I have turned them all off and it still happens which is why I can't figure out what "other computer" is using the same ip. my network is secure (I have even changed the factory passphrase to my own).
it has been a day or two since I've gotten disconnected. but the day I originally posted, I was disconnected 5 times in less than an hour. which made it frustrating as I had to go downstairs to reboot the modem since could not login to the modem to restart.
I've looked at the above link to the manuel but haven't tried anything yet.

Sounds like just about everything has been tried. It seems the router is having trouble assigning IP addresses. The factory reset I would have thought would fix this issue. Since it did not, if it continues to happen it may be necessary to replace the gateway device.

Hi again Derrick,
Thanks again for your assistance. I am thinking that would be my option to try next. had 2 disconnects this morning, however, this time, it reconnected/refreshed the webpage by itself in a few seconds as opposed to hanging on the "you are not connected" message and dropping connction to the modem completely. also didn't get the windows ip conflict message this time.

Have you tried adding DHCP reservations yet? Same thing happened with my father's netgear router and that fixed it. I think he had a WNR2000.

I am glad to hear you didn't get the IP conflict error message again. The interruption you had earlier sounds like it may have just been a hiccup with the wireless connection. I would keep an eye on things, see if it happens again. We do in-warranty replacement with equipment purchased from us as long is it is within the 1st year.
