WiFi

I recently purchased the Netgear N600 wireless router. I have a 2 story home with lots of walls and a poor wifi signal. I was told this was a good router for what I need. I installed the Netgear  to cox's Cisco gateway router/modem. I have a wired pc. The Cisco is connected to it. I now show 2 wifi signals and both are just fair thru out the house. I thought the netgear would boost my signal. Can someone help?  I'm not computer savy!!

There are a few different ways to use an alternative router. You may want to turn off the wireless in our device and just the N600. Or if your house is particularly large, you may put our gateway at one point, then set the N600 at another location to pick it up and repeat the signal.

How is your house laid out, and where in the house is the Cox modem currently located?

Hi Kip. It's a  2 floor home. The first floor is an open vaulted ceiling room about 18x20. The second floor is over a garage  and extends about 30 feet longer. The modem is on the second floor in a corner room. My pc is not wireless so the modem is hooked to it. The wirelss devices are mostly used on the first floor and thats the weakest signal. So its 4 walls and a walled staircase that the signal has to pass thru.  Also my pc shows that the Netgear internet and wifi connections are disconnected even though I see the Netgear wifi on the wireless devices. Thanks for the help.

The first and easiest thing to try would be to disable the wireless in our gateway. You said you have the Cisco, but you didn't specify the model. If it's the 3825, the one that doesn't do the phone, the manual is here: http://media.cox.com/support/print_media/internet/equipment/Cisco_Gateway_DPC3825_User_Guide.pdf and for the 3925, the one that does our digital phone service also, the manual is here: http://media.cox.com/support/print_media/phone/equipment/Cisco_DPQ3925_Gateway_User_Guide.pdf and the setup for both is basically the same.

Log into the gateway by going to http://192.168.0.1 and the default username/password is blank for the first login. If you've already set it, we can't recover it if you don't know what it is, you'd just have to reset the gateway to defaults.

Go to the "Wireless" tab at the top and the "Basic Settings" tab below that.

Select "Wireless Network: Disable" and then click "Save Settings."

Your desktop and your Netgear N600 will continue to operate as wired LAN clients connected to the gateway, and you will probably find that the Netgear has a stronger signal now that it is not fighting with the Cisco for radio bandwidth.

If this doesn't do it, the next thing is to set the N600 up as a repeater, which is a more complicated procedure, so try this first and let's see how it goes.
