Why can't I use the backspace button in Webmail to correct something I've typed?

In every other program I have - including this forum post - I can use the backspace key to correct a mis-typed letter.  Why won't Webmail allow that?  I have to hit the back arrow key to be 'in front' of the letter I want to delete and then hit the delete key - instead of one tap of the backspace button.
