upgraded modem to sb6141- initially fast but now extremely slow

I ordered the Motorola SB6141 modem to take advantage of DOCSIS 3.0 since I have the preferred package. It only took 20 minutes with Cox support to set it up which was great. I hopped over to speedtest.net during the call and I was getting 32 Mbps which was a big improvement from the 15 Mbps I was getting with my old modem

I was thoroughly impressed until about 20 minutes later the internet was crawling. I went back to speedtest and the tests are struggling to get above 4 Mbps. I noticed my account says I have a RGI6141 on the My Services page but not sure if that is related. The firmware is SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.12-SCM00-NOSH.

It looks like my wireless router is partially to blame. Plugging in a wire brings my download back to 32 Mbps. It looks like I'm headed to the store in the morning.

What speed should I be expecting with a wired connection?

I'm getting 60 Mbps with my 6141 on "Preferred." You need to have SOMEONE HERE update your "modem service code" to the DOCSIS 3.0 value.

Hi Mycodex,

Domino is correct; it looks like we need to update the modem service code to DOCSIS 3.0. I'm happy to take care of this for you! Your modem will reset as a result of this process, so I don't want to interrupt anyone who may be working online. It will only take a minute or two to fix. When is the best time for me to complete this process and reset the modem?

After this is complete, I suggest resetting your router and running a few more speed tests before making a decision about replacing the router. However, since you now have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, you'd see amazing results in internet speed if you pair the modem with a gigabit router.

Hi Becky, thanks for the reply. I'll be out all day so you're free to update it whenever you're available. I'll look into the router situation when I get home later today.

The router has been acting up lately anyways. I think I'm due for a replacement. Any recommendations? I was looking at the Netgear N750 which has 5 gigabit ports and dual band wireless n.

Hi Mycodex,

You should be all set; I've fixed the coding on our end and reset the modem. Everything looks good! Don't forget to reset your router when you get home.

While we can't make recommendations regarding what router to buy, you are definitely headed down the right path with the specs of the router you described. Domino and some of the other Forum users may be able to provide a few suggestions for you!

Awesome! I got excited and tested it. I'm getting a steady 60 Mbps and it peaked at 65 when I'm wired! Huge improvement. Thanks for all the help!

The wireless is still having issues. It only goes as high as 8 Mbps. I swapped in my old wireless g router and was able to get faster speeds. Oh well, looks like I'm headed to the store after work.
