Technically it could be transferred but there is all kind of red tape you would have to go through. Your better off returning the box and picking up another one for yourself. You will have to pay for it of course.

You sure they will swap cable equipment from one account to another? I had a similar request with a DVR and the answer I got was no. Besides that, wouldn't he have to be on the other persons account as a authorized user to get the equipment off that account? Or were you just making a joke about how it would still cost money?

Standard policy is to direct you to return the box to your nearest Solutions Store no questions asked. At that time you can request a box of your own which would be added to your account for activation by you once you get it home and connect it.
