Tivo Bolt and Cox - tiling/pixelation issues

I purchased a Tivo Bolt a few weeks back. It worked flawlessly with an antenna for the first two weeks. I decided to give cable a try and ordered service with a cable card from Cox last weekend. After some initial problems pairing, Cox sent a tech out. This was his first install for a Bolt. He was here for 4 hours and said the signal strength was "fine", showed me that it would work with their mini and basically said the problem was in the Tivo. When he left neither the tuning adapter or my tivo were working.

After some more troubleshooting on my end, I called the Cox card activation line and we were able to pair my card and get my tuning adapter working and I "get" all channels I am subscribed to but I have major tiling/pixelating on all channels. Tivo support tells me that the signal strength showing on the tivo is too low (67). I told them Cox says the signal strength is fine. +

Is it possible it could be too low anyway? I have minimal splitters installed. There is a line that  runs from the Cox cable box on the side of the house to a wiring closet. There is a 2 way splitter there - one leg to the modem and one to the tivo. I'm not sure how to get out of the middle of these two companies other than cancel my Cox cable service and send the Tivo back or go back to using it antenna only. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

A TiVo Signal Strength of 67 is way too low.

It needs to be above 80 but below 100, (in dBmV the signal needs to be greater than approx -5 dBmV, but should be closer to 0 dBmV or better)

SNR should be approx 35 - 40 dB

You need to get another tech out, a real Cox employee if possible.

At the street or pole the signal should be approx 15 - 20 dBmV, then you get signal loss per foot of Coax cable, and -3.5 dB for a 2-way splitter, or -7 dB for a 4-way splitter.
Chart of Signal Loss per 100ft of Coax

If you have long runs of old RG-59 Coax cable in your home that could be an issue.

What are the signals at your cable modem here: http://192.168.100.1/   This will give us a better idea

Here are mine

On the Tivo leg I have tried (and so did the Cox Tech) a multitude of different cables and splitters (there is a 2 way split in this leg for the turning adapter/tivo) all of which (cables and splitters) have tested good. In fact, let me plug my cable modem into the END of that Tivo leg (after the 2 way split for the tuner box and see what I get). Here it is, the coax unplugged from the Tivo and plugged into my modem, thus allowing me to make this post right now:

So, do I need to be talking to Cox Support about the signal or Tivo Support about a defective Bolt?

Where are you located?  Is it a Cisco or Motorola Tuning Adapter?

Those signals do look fine and should result in a 80 - 94 Signal Strength.

Is MoCA Networking ON or OFF on the TiVo?
Turn it OFF, if it is ON.

If you have a Cisco Tuning Adapter, and are NOT using MoCA, try running the Coax thru the Tuning Adapter instead of using the splitter.

Is there any way you can move the TiVo to the location of the Cable Modem? and use your monitor as the display to test?
You do not need to move the TA, just check signal levels on the Locals and others not needing the TA, mostly the Essential channels.

If nothing you do gets the TiVo Signal Strength up in the 80's and 90's I would replace the TiVo.

Also check your signal levels using the Tuning Adapter Diagnostics to see if they are also reporting good.

TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Help > Account & System Info > Tuning Adapter > Tuning Adapter Diagnostics

Here is the Cisco TAs Status Summary page 2 menu showing signal levels

Ahead of you on the replacing! I was convinced the problem was not Cox signal so I went to local store and purchased a new Tivo this afternoon. (I'm still in my 30 day return window on the first one)  I activated it  online,  swapped it with the Bolt we have been discussing (using same cabling), called Cox and had them pair my cable card to the new Tivo Bolt. Guess what? No more tiling or pixelating. Obviously the problem is not with the Cox signal as Tivo support keeps insisting, but with the Bolt itself.

Tivo support desperately needs to offer more, actually make that - any, testing for their own equipment instead of just insisting it's the cable company's fault.

Yeah....

What range does the TiVo Signal Strength report now?

Higher frequencies usually have a slightly lower number.

Signal Strength is 90

SNR is 36dB
