Static IP with a Wireless Modem

We recently set up a business internet account, which included a static IP address.  The technician said (and I am getting this information 2nd hand from my bisuness partner) that we should NOT just connect our wireless modem to the cable modem because it would mess up the static IP address.

Has anybody heard about how to configure a wireless modem with a static IP?  I just assumed I'd plug the modem in and it would find the IP address.  Worst case I'd have to manually configure the modem with the static IP.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

When you say wireless modem I believe you mean wireless router. :) The modem takes the internet signal in, and the router tells the signal where to go. (essentially)

The tech was likely trying to be helpful as you would probably need to configure the router with the static IP (and then reconfigure your computer to not use that static IP), but yes that is absolutely possible.

  • Connect router
  • Wire directly in to router to be able to change settings
  • Change computer connected to router to use DHCP instead of a static IP
  • Log in to router and input static IP

Of course if you don't want your wireless network just open to everyone you'll want to set up whatever security settings you decide on. Your router's manufacturer site/manual should have all the pertinent details on settings.
