He's probably new to Mac. I wouldn't think you'd need McAfee on a Mac. Mac has a very good built-in program, File Quarantine. Additionally, Apple is probably more on top of zero-day threats than any other program.
However, if you want McAfee, I wouldn't configure it for real-time protection because both programs grabbing the same file at the same time could be a problem.

Usually the reason someone wants a AV on their Mac is because someone told them they need one. That is why I was asking. Don't get me wrong, Macs CAN get malware, but anything that can infect a Mac can probably make swiss cheese out of McAfee. It's like cell phone AV, causes more problems then they prevent. Apple community look to agree.
