Prompt asking me to keep channel on air
Several times recently some of the upper channels have been black. Every time I search for this in the forums to find a solution I find a post where the reply is to make sure everything is plugged in correctly.
While watching H2 today (6-645pm AZ) a notification popped up saying that this channel was going to temporarily go off the air unless I hit select to continue watching. I hit select, the notification went away, and the channel stayed on.
This is clearly not an issue with loose prongs or a box which needs service. So now we don't have access to certain channels if we aren't watching it at the time the notification pops up? What gives?

Why would you "need access" to a channel you were not watching at the time? If you want it on for the Dog when you are not home, just set that channel to record all day.
This is called Switched Digital Video (SDV), It allows Cox to provide much more content and services in the limited bandwidth spectrum that is available.

It is similar to OnDemand, Where a channel is usually only sent over the cable when someone in your neighborhood requests that channel. There is sometimes a "timeout" period (usually several hours) where the channel will no longer be sent to your location, unless some action is taken on your part, as in retuning the channel or pressing the Select button.. This does not effect recordings, If you are recording that channel it should stay live for at least the length of the recording.

If a channel is temporarily off the air when I select it, can I then activate it, or am I locked out for hours until it's available again?

You can always change the channel up and then back down to reactivate the channel.
