I am having trouble with Ping-time in online games. I am a premier member, so my bandwidth is fine, but i appears that Cox is routing me through Atlanta Georgia when I try to connect to a Los Angeles Server. (I am located in Las Vegas). Doesn't make sense to me to route my signal clear from the west coast, to the east coast, just to come back west. Please help!
I am trying to paste a ping-plotter screenshot, but it doesnt want to let me do it..
Help Please!?!

Try posting normal ping/tracert/pathping data from command prompt.
Also, alot of times it appears traffic is being routed through Atlanta because the servers are geo tagged to Cox's Headquarters, which is in Atlanta Georgia.
Last, what game(s) are you having issues with? PC only or console too?

Sure - here is a tracert:

Please note: This is the best it has been for quite some time - earlier tonight it was >140 ms.
The game is Quake Live, PC based. I live in Las Vegas, NV, and I ping about the same to Washington, DC, as to Los Angeles. I ping significantly lower to Dallas than I do to Los Angeles.
I very much appreciate any help. Please let me know if I can provide any more info.
Thank you!

Looks like tracert is normal until it gets into Peer1. Can you do a pathping to the same place?
Also, might want to check out this forum post. But disregard the guy at the end saying to complain to ISP, when the first part clearly shows issue inside Peer1. Peer1 is kind of like the Walmart of peering nodes.

I do not know anything at all about networking, so I really do appreciate your time. Thank you.
Reading that forum post you referenced`, it would appear to me that they are indicating problems with the local router - did something in my tracert trigger concerns for you? Is the problem local (meaning here in my house)?
Is #5 an actual hop? Also, it seems strange to me that there could be any logic in routing a signal from Las Vegas to Dallas to ultimately end up in LA..Dallas is 1200 miles southeast from me, whereas Los Angeles is 270 miles southwest from me.. Please let me know if I am assuming too much - not sure if that really means "Dallas"..

Looks like more and more of a issue with Peer1. Someone else in San Marcos, CA at peer @ 10ge.xe-0-0-2.lax-600w-sbdis-1.peer1.net which looks to be where you "might" be having the issue. See post here. Not much data given but maybe you can post yours too? See post here.

Just added a new pingpath and tracert in the other forum. Will take a few minutes, as they have to validate the post since I am not a registered user there.
Thank you

Anyone have any input on this? I purchased Premier to be able to game. It doesn't make sense for routing to take me 1200 miles east in order to come back to the same region of the country. While I understand that the consensus seems to be that this is not a Cox problem, but instead a peer1 problem, anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise - people who play the same game and have COX as their provider have the same latency issues I am seeing. People using other providers do not have the same issue. I don't know if the problem is due to an agreement between Cox and Peer1 that handoffs take place in Dallas, but if that is the case, then all Cox customers who live on the west coast are at a disadvantage.
I would like to see input from Cox on the issue and look forward to a speedy resolution, as this is not the experience I anticipated when upgrading to this very expensive Internet package.
Thank you!

For some reason, I expected that posting my service issues with Cox to the Cox forum would result in a response from a Cox employee - guess my expectations were too high?

I looked over the trace routes you provided and it looks like the issue is outside of our network. You can see where it leaves our network and that is where the latency seems to be happening. Do you have these issues with any other games or any other sites?

It appears to me that it is routing through Dallas before being handed off. Is that really the best route to Los Angeles, from Las Vegas?

It appears to me to be Dallas, but I am far from an expert. I based that conclusion on two things;
Hop #6 10ge.ten1-3.dal-eqx-cor-1.peer1.net [206.223.118.30]
1: The "dal-eqx" would indicate to me that it is Dallas.
2: When I search geolocation for 206.223.118.30, it comes up as Dallas. I know this is not always accurate, and may reflect a company's headquarters, but this coupled with the "dal" naming convention led me to assume that the handoff was in Dallas.
Can you please confirm that this is actually LA?
Thank you

Sequence of events;
- 16 days ago I posted a question in the Cox internet help forums. This is because I have a problem with my Cox Premiere service. I have had High Speed Internet service with this company since it was known as Las Vegas Cable Modem and all email addresses were @LVCM.com. (>14 years or so if memory serves correctly).
- I have had several responses, one from a very helpful person who is not a Cox employee, and two from Cox employees. The responses from the Cox Employees;
------- In a nutshell, the first was a statement that this is as good as it gets, the problem lies elsewhere. This prompted a question from me as to whether or not the best routing is through Dallas (1200 miles away) when going from Las Vegas to Los Angeles (~240 miles by car - the opposite direction from Dallas). The Cox representative who posted the statement did not feel inclined to respond to my question, however another Cox representative did (Response 2), stating that the path is through LA, not Dallas. That appears to be incorrect information, so I questioned the accuracy of the response as did someone else, but that Cox representative has now followed the lead of the first Cox responder - mute.
** Can someone from Cox please assist this decade plus long premier customer?? While I dont expect people to jump through hoops for me, I do expect normal levels of communication at least - ie: responses to questions and such! **
Thank you very much.
It has been 16 days since I posted the problem. I feel that I have been very patient.
