phone out with power outage?

The phone goes out when there is a power outage - not good for emergencies.  AT&T has a back up battery pack for their modem.  Does cox?  or do I have the wrong settings?  If a person from outside calls it is a busy signal.    clb

It is a problem and sometimes goes unnoticed to long at our house. Being without service for several hours is not good.

A backup battery for what.? When we lose power at the house or it is interrupted a backup battery can't help that. My computer is on a backup battery, but when we have a power hit the phone always goes off no matter what. So I guess I am confused as to what you mean as a backup battery.

All I do when phone goes off because of power failure is unplug the power phone modem for 10 seconds then plug back in. Usually comes back on within minutes. That is not a problem. The problem is that it happens to often as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for all of the feedback.  My understanding about the battery back up is that it works like your hardwired smoke detector or a generator, it kicks in and keeps the modum going while the electricity is off.  I am going to check at the service center and investigate this battery back up.

I think there may be some confusion between the different phone service type. Circuit switch uses a outside modem called a NIU but the new type is Packet switch, AKA VOIP, and uses a inside modem. Inside modem has a place to put a battery. It kicks in if power is loss and the length of time it functions on battery depends on the exact battery they give you and the phone's use. One trick is if you use your phone modem for internet too, unplugging your router will make the phone service last longer. A NIU has a battery back up of sort out on the poles. You will see it a big green square box on the pole about  the size of a mini fridge. These batteries can be further extended in time of outages by Cox connecting gas generators to the backups. However, if a pole is hit, and it knocks down the cable wire, doesn't matter if the phone part has power if there is no signal making it to either modem.
