Phone service quit working two weeks ago out of the blue. Called customer service and they confirmed bad signal. OK - send someone out? Yep, but you have to be home. Why, I say... The equipment is all out front and accessible. ***, you did the install without me home. Oh yeah, last appointment at 5-6p (gee, because people who subscribe to cable don't have jobs, right?).
Hmmm... self-service? E-mail'd phone support. Wow! New low in customer service. If the grammar wasn't so bad, I would've assumed it's just a software agent picking out keywords and pasting canned responses...
Well, turns out Cox did me a favor. The value proposition has been getting worse and worse with Cox over the years, but I always thought it was just too much of a hassle to try another provider. But, since I have to take time out of my schedule for a utility call at my house, why not have it be new service install? Yay!
Happy to say CenturyLink installed today (phone + internet). DirecTV next week, and then no more Cox. While I have no illusions about CenturyLink service, I'm saving 40% initially and will paying about the same after 12 months - and ya know, the phone works! The kicker? The internet SMOKES Cox in performance. The experience in browsing is significant, and when run side by side on speed test sites (still have Cox - afraid to cancel just phone+internet as they hosed my TV service last time when I added phone), Cox consistently shows 5M down / 3M up (vs. claims of 18M down / 4M up) while CenturyLink shows 19M down / 4.5M up (vs. claims of 20M down / 5M up).
I don't know that CenturyLink + DirecTV (best to order DirecTV separately, the bundle is not a good deal) will be great, but given how miserable Cox service has been, it's certainly worth a try! Good luck to all - and remember, companies (perhaps, rightly so) only respond to financial incentive. If we want better service, we have to vote with our wallets.

So true about Cox, but I'm stuck with this 2-yr contract. I've had CenturyLink, it was okay, but DirecTV too expensive charge twice as much as Cox after the promo. There are better service providers than these two. Good luck!

I hear you on the service....my phone has been crackling for a while now. I can't hear it but people I'm on the phone with can hear it. I called Cox and was told...sorry....we need you to be home. Of course THEIR hours don't work with MY work hours. Now my phone is completely out. I have Verizon coming on Wednesday to switch my service. I'm all set with Cox and their poor quality service.

Crackling is usually a symptom of problems on the analog side of the service. Since the conenction is digital from the box to us I suspect his is why they needed a technician to come out and troubleshoot. Usually technicians are available from 8a-7p 7 days a week. I'm sure if we took a look we could find something in that range that works for your schedule.

My problem with COX and other phone services is the idea that NEW CUSTOMERS should get the better prices---WHY? I just added a new line to my service and asked about the $9.99 for 3 months---nope --- only for new customers---WHY? Why the *** do people they don't even serve, can't be sure they will even pay their bills get better deals, but for me, a customers for over 6 yrs can't get the price break? Then they wonder why folks leave. Well thinking about canceling everything Cox and going to another provider for 3-6 months then coming back (maybe) as new. But if the other service is better than they just lost me altogether. I already have Dish and love it, and wouldn't go back to Cox cable for nothing. The internet is OK but have trouble with the slingbox sometimes. Still the idea that new people get better deals (which the old customers have to foot the bill) is getting on my nerves. Apparently they keep hiring these dumb **** new college grads in MARKETING who think it's better to keep getting new customers and shafting their old ones. Idiots.
