motorola mtr700 tuning adaptor firmware 4 updates outdated

I've been trying unsuccessfully for two weeks to get my tuning adapter firmware updated. A technician was supposed to come out and look at it, but he called before showing up and said that he doesn't have a clue and that their wasn't a lead tech in the area to help out. Because of this he wasn't going to bother showing up.  He said he would get back to me when they figured it out. Guess what? I have yet to hear back from him. I also sent an email to technical support.  They replied that they would forward the issue to the field specialists.  It's been a week..........

From what I understand the firmware should get pushed out from the head end once the TA is hooked up.  The people at Ceton (I'm using a ceton infinitv6 tuner card) agree with this and told me to contact Cox concerning the issue.  Which I have done.  The responses I get or lack there of is a bit concerning.

Why is it that another company can tell me what the problem is, but Cox cannot?

So, I'm stuck with an mtr700 that is running firmware version 1.33.  I would like to have 1.36 or 1.37 so that the device will support 6 tuners.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Where are you located?

Cox should have updated the firmware many months ago, to firmware version 01.37

Firmware updates should be downloaded automatically from the headend and all TAs should be running the same firmware.  An extremely low OOB frequency signal level could be a reason for not getting the update.  You should be able to check the OOB signal level from the TA Diagnostics.

TiVo specifically states "Motorola tuning adapter, it requires firmware version xxx.36 or later"  for 6 Tuner capability.

Well I'm glad to know that I was on the right track and that the Ceton people weren't leading me astray. Why the original tech didn't check the signal levels while he was here I don't know. But I'm positive I had those diagnostic pages up while he was here, maybe he did see them, but didn't think they would be a problem or simply didn't want to do the job at that time of day. It was after 5pm. I'm in Suffield, Ct, north central Ct. These are the OOB signals found on the tuning adapter diagnostic page: Downstream Status -OOB Freq 75.25 MHZ SNR 24 dB Good -Inband Freq 561 MHZ SNR 36 dB Good Upstream -Freq 8.48 MHZ Req Lvl 35 dBmV Actual Lvl 36 dBmV Not sure if this is the problem or not. I read somewhere that the OOB signal should be 30+. Not sure why the TA and my modem or so far off. I have one split (balanced); one line going to my modem and the other going to the TA which is in series with the cable card tuner. Modem Signal and power lvls: Downstream Signal to Noise Ratio 36 dB 36 dB 36 dB 36 dB Power Level -2 dBmV -2 dBmV -2 dBmV -2 dBmV Upstream Power Level 43 dBmV 42 dBmV 41 dBmV 41 dBmV

Your signals look OK, the Downstream Status -OOB Freq 75.25 MHZ SNR 24 dB is the important one, SNR 24 dB is a bit low,

Try taking out the splitter and connect directly to the incoming coax, reboot the TA and let it connect for 30 minutes.

If that does not do it you will need to have someone here contact an engineer at your headend to see if they have deployed the firmware, and if not ask them to contact Corporate in Atlanta for the newer firmware.

Email all your info, including the RF MAC address of your TA to cox.help@cox.com

Hopefully one of the techs here will chime in.

While you are checking things your Motorola CableCARD firmware should be FW* 6.25

I believe I have already tried that, but I don't remember how long I left it setup that way.  I'll try it again and check to see if it improves the signal quality.  As well as give it enough time to perform the update.

But, as I see it, a tech will eventually be needed to clear up the poor signal quality no matter what.

If it doesn't work I will follow your other suggestions.

Thank you for your time and effort,

No luck. I removed the splitter and let it sit like that for about 2 hours today. Power cycled it and let it sit some more. The firmware never updated. Removing the splitter didn't seem to make the SNR signal any better, if anything it got worse; 26 to 24. Which doesn't make much sense, but that is what the diagnostic page reported. The next step is to get a technician out to check/fix my line/signal.

Thanks Pat

psklenar above, is located in Manchester, CT,  I would assume Suffield, CT is on the same headend, (I cannot be sure though)

If that is the case you may need to swap out the Tuning Adapter as something is preventing your TA from downloading the Firmware update.  It still could be signal levels/issues, but a TA swap may be needed.

I was on the phone with Cox again today. They are sending out a tech to trouble shoot the signal/TA. Hopefully they resolve the problem. I think it's a little odd that my modem is showing 36dB and my TA is showing 24-26dB. Removing the splitter actually reduces the SNR on the TA. The other thing I'm thinking is that maybe the firmware revision is so far outdated on the TA that the headend doesn't know what to do with it. I'll update tomorrow if the tech makes any progress.

The tech that came out today, the lead tech, was very knowledgeable. But he was at a loss on why the TA wouldn't update. Thankfully he brought one that already had the correct firmware. Issue resolved. We did discuss the signal quality, 24-26 dB is actually extremely good at that frequency and it is probably better than what the diagnostic is reporting. All is good, all 6 tuners are available for use. Thank you for your assistance, it was appreciated. J Boucakis
