More Money or Ignorant Technician?

I wanted to know why I couldn't get an internet signal thru the Cisco router that Cox installed in my den. It powers the Phone & Cable TV, AND it has Internet capability, too. My "tech", on the phone Saturday, said that I could only have one computer linked up unless I paid more $$$$$ to Cox. Is this true? If so, NO WAY! If it's not true, then why couldn't that router have been remotely addressed by the tech to send an Internet signal to my den. I currently receive my home internet signal thru my own personal Cisco router in my home office. What's the TRUTH here?

Cox gives out one DHCP IP address. What you assign it to, router, Xbox or computer, Cox doesn't care. It sounds like you atleast have a phone modem. The question is does it have wireless abilities? What model is it? I doubt Cox can control what devices connect to it, so the only thing I think the charge could be for was for the install of a new device (with wireless) or the paying of just having the tech come out to type in the password for your laptops. If its the former, you can always just connect your own router to it instead. If it's the later, you can always configure the device yourself.

I choose to await a reply from someone who actually works for Cox.

Snoopy Mutt,

The purpose of the Cox Support Forums are to allow customers to discuss technical topics related to residential Cox Cable Television services with other customers. Health Edge is a very knowledgeable and helpful member of our forum community.

We don't provide a device that provides cable TV as well as phone.  It's possible to have a telephone modem (eMta) that can also provide internet service, but many customers opt to use a separate modem either due to personal preference or the specifications of their home.  If a customer has both an eMta and a broadband modem in use, in standard applications only one would be activated for internet service. The only way possible to assign internet service to a second modem is if the account is placed into billing for a second instance of internet service.

What device in your den are you trying to connect to the internet?

That is your right and I respectfully abided. I only meant to offer assistance, on this forum, with anything you might need help with, rather than have to pay Cox for. Thats when I thought they were trying to charge you for Cox Tech Solutions, ot to rent a different kind of gateway. It seems like instead it would be for a 2nd modem and separate internet service. Do you have a router or any kind of wireless device? I think buying one will be cheaper than paying for two modems IMO.

Thank you for your official reply, ColleenD. I can now see that it's really all about the money. Due to that, my extra CPU will have to remain a stand-alone. As for Health Edge, the rest of your members are more than welcome to his opinions.

Colleen, would you be so kind as to tell me why my and Domino's comment was removed? This is a open forum so we have every right to post here as anyone. Considering the two of us probably fix most of the problems on the forums, I would think we would get a little more support. If your going to censor us, at least please tell us. Not cool.

Your extra CPU? Did you confuse modem for CPU?

Your statement doesn't even make sense. The rest of my members? What members? And thank you for telling me I have the right to my opinion. It seems the moderator isn't so kind. And if you want employees only, just say so in your original post.

What are your ground rules? If they allow the complete editing and censorship of posts, then I really don't want to a part of them.

It's standard internet forum policy that if one post is to be removed, all posts in that sub-thread - including the instigating post - should also be removed. In this case, that was not done. Also, PMs should be sent explaining the reason for removal.

Domino,

I'm not sure why notification did not send since its standard as part of the moderation process. We'll look into it.
