Latency Issue with Modem/Router // Premier Tier Internet Package

This is my ping test between my PC and modem/router. I purchased the Netgear CG4500BD and I never had a problem with it before. However, after moving to a new apartment and upgrading my internet package from Preferred to Premier, I have this latency issue. Even after Cox Speed Test, I still have issue when I'm watching a live stream videos such as Netflix and such.

Is there any fix to this?

By the way, I'm hard wired from my PC to the modem/router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable.

I'm not sure if that will affect by any chance.

PLEASE, let me know what I can do! I don't know if it's my router or my internet speed!

If you ping the same way while streaming, does the latency spike match with any problems? Skips in audio/buffering/etc.

Something else you could try is disabling wireless to make sure all other traffic except your hard wire is disabled. If the latency goes away, turn off all devices and turn them on one by one and making sure they can get back online. If you enable one, and the latency returns, then you have your culprit.

Health Edge,

I tried turning off the wireless to make sure all traffic goes to the hard wired, it actually got worst. I'm seeing latency go up to 600ms-800ms, with a few 2ms. I'm not sure if it may be the router itself or my ethernet cable. What do you think?

MichaelJ,

I'll send my personal information on twitter, as soon as I get onto it. Thank you.

MichealJ,

I actually went to Facebook with the DM about my issue. I hope I hear from someone.

What happens if you connect wireless instead? If latency is only wired, probably ethernet. If on both wired and wireless, probably something wrong with the gateway/router.

Yeah, I have come to a conclusion that it might be my router/modem. I have tried the ping test from hard wired and wireless, and it is still there. The latency goes from 2ms-998ms (highest so far) and then it stops to being >1ms. I find it weird that I just purchase this about 3 months ago.

Sounds like a issue with the switch inside the gateway. Did you have any recent thunderstorms or power issues?

Also, where did you buy it? If from Cox, I think they can swap it out. If you bought it from a store or online, call the manufacturer? 3 months isn't long so should be under warranty.

It may, I'll find out if the issue is still there with the new router.

I purchase it from cox and I'll ask them if they can swap it out.

Recent power issues? No. I don't think AZ experience much of any thunderstorms or power outage.

Wish me luck! I'll let you guys know if it's still there.

So I got a upgrade from Netgear N900 CG4500BD to Netgear AC1900 C6300BD. I see improvement of speed throughout.

But, after doing the ping test between my PC and Router, I'm still seeing latency issue, but it's quite infrequent compared to before.

I'll do some testing on my ethernet cable and see if that may fix the problem. I have not done the wireless testing yet though.

Fjaysay, the AC1900 is a nice step up from the N900. Your data throughput/wireless coverage can be affected by environmental factors such as building materials, so placement is key.
