Hi, I just upgraded my internet from preferred to premier and am now only getting around 32.5 mbps download speed or so...before the upgrade everything was running smoothly and I was getting at least 50 mbps at all times. Has anybody had the same problem? Why is the speed lower after I upgraded? Please help.

Whoever you talked to at the office for upgrading your service might've entered the wrong code onto your account
There's 2 different codes for premier service for using a docsis 2 vs docsis 3 modem and if they put the docsis 2 code on your account, then you get limited to 32 mbps.
So call them up and have them check that. If you need to get specific, tell them to make sure you have the 30161 code and not the 30115

Well the thing is, I made the upgrade on my account on the cox website. I got an advertised email that I could upgrade my internet for an additional $5/month. Could the code problem still be possible?

Only other thing I think you could check is to make sure your modem is still running in bonded channel mode since single channel mode only gives about 32 mbps as well
Go to 192.168.100.1
Find the signal diagnostic page and make sure it has multiple channels bonded
Some brands of modems such as motorola/arris will have the downstream and upstream (2nd and 3rd) lights glow blue instead of green to indicate they're bonding multiple channels
