Internet Speed Fluctuations

Running into huge swings of download speeds. Had major issues on the 13th, 15th, and now today. My download speed had been at 3mbs, and its typically much much higher.

What area are you in? A post right before yours sound similar, but for all I know you could be on other side of the country.

More on point, how are you testing the speed? And are testing connecting direct to the modem?

Hi NeslonB,

Getting 3 Mbps download is pretty slow, I was able to locate the account and take a look at the modem information.  The signal levels look good.  I see the latest speed test showed 117.9 Mbps down/11.86 Mbps up.  Where did you run the speed test that showed 3 Mbps down?  I would recommend resetting the cable modem to see if that helps also.

DerrickW,

Thank you for the response. At one point I was actually getting even lower than that. I was seeing 0.25mbs at the lowest and 25mbs as the highest. Around 1am last night I was finally running around 35mbs for around 10-15 minutes straight before I went to bed. I could do back to back speed checks and get varying numbers per run. I ran the speed test at my home location attached to the account. I've tried resetting the modem multiple times with no success on improvement.

NelsonB,

It looks like the modem has not been reset in a few days - Uptime 3 Days, 12:20:01:00.  I can reset the modem from our side and have you test the speed again.  Are you running these tests wired or on a wireless connection?

DerrickW,

That would be helpful. I've been running the tests wired. Both my Blueray player and Computer are wired and they were both having the same issue.

I am experiencing the same fluctuations in speed.  I pay for premier and received that for about two weeks after installing my upgraded modem, but now my speeds are way below what they should be.  Wired is 23 dn, 9.85 up.  Wireless (sitting right near the router) is 5.98 dn, 13 up.  This reversal of speeds began in the last few days.

I know mine started on Saturday. Everything was running just fine, and the at some point Saturday night my internet took nose dive in performance. I brushed it off thinking that since it was raining here someone probably hit a pole or something, but since I am still having issues I am trying to understand whats going on. Haven't had this bad of problems during the 2 years I've had Cox internet. Seems like it has to be something wrong on their end, or with the modem I am renting.

NelsonB,

I reset your modem now, I would like to have run the speed test again and see what the results are.

@Melissa M.

Looking from this end it appears the transmit power level being reported by the modem are out of specification.  Are there any extra cable splitters you could try removing to see if that helps any?

My first speed test was 13 mbs download with 11mbs upload. Next 2 were around 25mbs, and 4th was 15.79mbs...

I am having the same issue that most of you are having. What frustrates me is that we have been here in Arizona for about 3 years. For some reason about every few months we have this issue. We buy the premier service, my degree is in Computers and the hubby has one in Electronic Engineering. With quite a few complaints it would make sense to address it on your end. When we were in North Carolina if we had any internet problems they would have a little announcement about issues in my area when I called in. I appreciated it because at least we knew that there were issues, just frustrates me when you call into Cox there is deflection from the real problem. Yes we have turned the modem off and on again, we are aware of the programs that can harm our computers ran the speed check, am getting 1Mbps Download 14Mbps Upload with 151 Latency. It makes no sense to me that we pay for the highest internet speed and are not getting itor even half of it. Because both my husband and I work with computers we depend Cox to follow through. Usually we are patient with issues, but not everyone is having issues because they need to update the modem. So I would kindly request Cox to address this issue so we can all move on to more productive things.

One thing I'd suggest if you haven't tried yet is to try testing speeds with a wired device connected directly to the modem.  Should that fail it might be time to have a technician come out and take a look.

Internet ran great last night, but its back as of 7pm tonight. Massive swings in download speed again. I tried to reset the modem, but it didn't help.
