Internet connection issues

So I've been having what seems to be the same problem as most people's posts. My Internet is constantly going in and out... Has been for about a month now. I've made numerous calls to Cox and spoken with tech support. I originally chalked it up to my old SB 5101 being 8+ years old. I bought a new SB 6121 and continued to have the same issues. Called Cox again and had a tech visit the house. He did not find anything wrong and said I had good signal strength. Then I thought maybe it was the DOCSIS 3.0 modem and WRT54G modem having issues with each other. I switched out the router for my AirPort Extreme Base Station. To my dismay, I am still having the same problems. The only assumption I can make is that there is something going on beyond my equipment and possible could be outside my home. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix these issues? I read in another forum question that it could be something to where you fall in line of service with your neighborhood's data lines.

Thanks,

Chris

Don't know if we are in the same problem but I continually get the message "Internet Explorer is not functioning".

When looking at your modem I see the upstream power levels are being reported out of specification on the high end suggesting there is some kind of issue with the return signal back to us.  Do you have any extra splitters you could try bypassing?

As far as I see, there are no splitters associated with my connection. I've looked in my attic and cannot tell because of all the blown in insulation. I am hooked up directly through the On Q box in my laundry room with a single line.

I'm knocking on wood because since I originally posted I have not seen any loss of connection. I do not know what I can attribute this too but I am pleased at this point. I still have my SB6121 connected to the Apple Airport Base Station and have seen no issues. I'll be home the next two days to fully see if there is any disconnects throughout the day.

Would there be any other explanation as to why the upstream levels would be so high?

Thanks,

Chris

I am not seeing that error message when accessing the internet. I get the error messages on the browser page of either Firefox or Chrome when trying to access the internet. I received an email through a Cox Technician to have me connect my computer directly to the modem and run a ping test... I have not done so since my issues have since disappeared.

Hope your issues get resolved.

Thanks,

If the modem is trying to communicate back to us and our system can't hear it the modem will increase the transmit power level and try again.  Any source of signal interference is a possible cause including noise being introduced back into the lines and/or loose fittings, or it could even be a problem with the equipment itself.  Once the transmit power level gets too high the signal gets distored like if you have ever turned up the volume on your stereo to the maximum for example.  The sound gets louder but so does the static noise.

Can this be caused by something electrical? Possibly in the home or an external source?

I wouldn't expect elevated transmit power to be electrical in and of itself however transmit levels have since appeared to return to normal numbers but the modem is reporting lots of power adjustments to maintain sync which could be a power issue.  If the modem is connected to a power strip with a lot of other devices it might be worth trying to move the modem to a different power circuit if possible.

Isn't there a place on the Cox website to see where current outages are and updates?

At this time no, if I can help with anything in particular you may email me at coxhelp@cox.com.

The modem is plugged in directly to a wall outlet and I have a router and switch next to it and those are connected to a power strip.

I previously asked about the external electrical factor because I have noticed a loud buzzing sound outside my house and I am contributing it to the light post that is constantly flickering. But even that I wouldn't think would cause electrical interference to my home...

Thanks,
