interent speed upgrade

I recently tried to upgrade my internet speed from 50 to 100. 12 after the order processed my speed was still 50, I have a wireless modem provided by Cox and technical support and customer service says is the newest and rated for speed. I have been told in order to get the promised speed I need to be hard wired into the modem. Is this true and if so why aren't we told about this when purchasing service. I had them take the new service off went back to the slow one to take the time to research this problem. Any help would be appreciated

"12 after the order processed my speed was still 50,"

12 what? Days? Does it show the new service tier if you sign into your account at https://www.cox.com/resaccount/home.cox ?

"I have a wireless modem"

What model modem? The model should be either on front or on the bottom on a sticker. Any mentioned on Cox list of approved modems should work for Premier. You may get more consistent wired service and faster Wifi speeds with a newer gateway, but you should be able to get 100Mbps wired to any.

" why aren't we told about this when purchasing service."

Part of it is because you are talking to someone trained in selling and activating the service, not in the technical details. The second part is wireless isn't a Cox service, but a ability added through hardware. It simular to how they won't go out of their way to tell you need a HD TV to watch Cox HD service. It's sort of presumed. Wireless speed and range totally depend on the wireless hardware(both router/gateway and your laptops/phones) and the wireless space around you. By wireless space I mean active interference causes like microwaves, cordless phones, other networks and passive interference like walls, windows, pipes, etc. There is no way to know exactly what wireless performance you get without hooking everything up and testing.

As for what would would work best for you, would need to know what you already have now, and how much time/effort you are looking to invest. I, and others here, would be happy to help, just need more data.

Your actual WiFi speed depends on what WiFi standard you are using (g, n, ac) and the distance from your router.  Per this article on speedguide, net, the actual average speeds you can expect are:

g ~ 20Mbps
n ~ 40-50Mbps
ac ~ 100+Mbps

I am on the 50Mbps plan and get 50-62Mbps over my ac wireless network.  I did a test, copied a 300MB file from my NAS.  Over 2.4GHz wireless n I got a max of 61Mbps.  Over 5GHz wireless ac I got a max of 201Mbps.

So you can see, if you don't have both an 802.11ac router and client, you will be limited.  What model gateway do you have?  Did you try a wired connection to see if everything was provisioned correctly for the 100Mbps connection?
