I'm back to 4 Bonding Channels Instead of 8. Did I break it?

Long explanation so bare with me. So yesterday night I was so happy that my speeds were back to normal that I was excited to do some streaming. But literally an hour after I was completely concluded with forum posts, my download speeds pummeled similar to what other people are posting. when I checked it, it was downloading 5-10Mbps (about 8pm). I had all my 8 channels still, but the download was awful.

So I let it be and continued with my life for a while. At around 1 am I went ahead and checked the speed and it was still slow. So I proceeded to do a factory reset through the modem's web page. After rebooting the modem, I was surprised to see that it was back to only 4 channels. The odd thing was that the download speeds were normal (63 - 64 Mbps). The next odd thing that happened is that according to the logs (posted below) show that the firmware was downloaded again (???) at around 5am. As you can see, I have done a couple of reboots after that, but still the same 4 channels. Is the 4 channels the norm now? Or did I just break something lol? What does the sudden dropping of speed mean? Please someone explain.

Right now the download speeds are normal 63 - 64 Mbps with 21 - 24 Mbps upload, but I'll keep an eye on it tonight as it seems to be the time things start going haywire.

Looking at the DSL Reports, I see other people reporting similar issues with download speeds and channels. Maybe I didn't break it.

Visual image of myself at the moment: Eyes wide open, pulling my hair up and asking "What is going on!!??"... LOL

Looking at the big picture, and all the other posts, I think the firmware and channel bonding may be part of a bigger issue, and not the problem. I say that because the problem seems to be effecting people with different modems, different tiers, and some are having issues with channel bonding, and some are not. I think the most direct answer will come from the engineer , but looks like Tiffany is already on the case.

Something else I picked up while looking at your older posts, which may be relevant:

"Per the notes from tech 9523, "this is an intermittent floor have definitely determined it is off amp 42 but dropped again. Will monitor."

That was in regards to a upload issue, but the fact that it states that there was a ingress issue they were never able to nail down before it disappeared makes me think maybe that got worst with storm? If nothing else, maybe a place to start.

Thank you Tiffany, hopefully they find something conclusive.

Agreed. At this point I do believe it's an issue affecting several customers.

Thank you for looking back at a post of mine from a while back. In regards to that upload issue, the signals did improve at that point. I saw a substantial difference on the upload stability with the constant 20Mbps in Cox's speed test.

I'm hopeful they will find a resolution for this. I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you.

I wanted to give an update from my side since something odd is happening.

I was keeping an eye on the download speeds yesterday night and they were normal (62 - 64Mbps). The speeds have been steady all this time, but still the same 4 channels. I'll keep monitoring it. Btw, the Kansas Market speedtest wasn't working right this morning, it was showing lower speeds than usual, but when I tried other markets (Louisiana, Las Vegas, etc.) they gave me more normal results.

Now, the odd thing is that my modem apparently downloaded and installed the firmware again TWICE, once at 3am and at 5am this morning. Since the 5am download is exactly the same time from yesterday, it's probably automated. I'm not sure if this is normal because I've never seen this happen before. I did a quick reboot this morning and no changes happened. I do understand that it's Sunday and people need to rest LOL. Here are the log entries of the updates:

Thank you Tiffany for following up. I'll keep an eye out for any changes.

As of now, the firmware redownload is happening on a schedule apparently. The last one was this morning at 3 am as posted below.

Running speed tests, the resuslts from cox .net are normal 64Mbps down and 20Mbps up. But it's curious that other speed tests outside of Cox (different servers on speakeasy.net and speedtest.net) are erratic 15-35Mbps down and 20Mbps down, which are normally consistent with Cox results. Just wanted to point it out just in case.

Can you look at the firmware and see if it's actually changing each time? Like is it reloading the same firmware over and over or is it different each time? Or is it going back and forth?  I have heard of this happening once on another ISP, but I can't find the post. They had the wrong firmware or something loaded for that model in the CMTS.

Did any of the others with similar issues have the firmware issue? I don't remember them mentioning it when I went through them, but I may be mistaken.

Health Edge,

Well, every time I look at the page (morning and afternoon), it seems to have the same firmware. One thing though, I haven't payed close attention to the Boot Version, only the Firmware name and build time. This is what it shows right now:

Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM01-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot(25CLK) 1.0.12.18m3

Firmware Build Time: Mar 6 2014 15:23:55

I wonder if this has anything to do with the SB6141 and SB6121 sharing the same firmware, just modified differently. That could be where the boot version comes in. That might explain why you weren't able to get all 8 channels, since the SB6121 is a 4x4 tuner modem, but to be honest, we are reaching the limit of my knowledge of Cox's system. I feel we are close to the answer though...either that or WAAAAAY off track.

By the way, is your SB6141 white or black?

Kind of baffling from my point of view, but it's always a possibility. I'm limited on a lot of the details with this sort of stuff, but I'm sure the proper people will be looking into this area. For now it seems we just need to wait for an update on what the local team finds (or doesn't because we're way off lol). I'm crossing my fingers on the outcome.

My SB6141 is white btw.

I feel like thats important...but I just can't tie it all together. I looked, and other people have completely different modems. Im stumped.  I look forward to the update from the moderator. Sorry if I wasted any of your time.

No worries Health Edge. Sometimes you can find solutions with the slightest bit of information. Any help and input is always appreciated, this because I can always learn something from these situations...

Thank you and Tiffany

Is there an update on this? My modem has been downloading software every day and the 4 downstream channels still persist. The download time vary from 1am, 3 am and 5am... These are some of the log entries.

Seeing the same log entries / restarts at the same times Chanmiro.  Same modem as you too -- SB6141-white.    Even with only 4 bonded channels I was getting 65Mb/s, but still seeing non-consistent performance. Speeds have dropped again this evening. Averaging 18 Mb/s  (Low 6Mb/s, High 23Mb/s)    I've NEVER had an issue with my Cox HSI before this recent development.  I've been with them for 12 years.  We're going on 2 weeks now.

I don't want to speculate what the issue is, but I would like some extra eyes on the feedback being left by the users here.

I've actually started looking at the daily mailings that I'm getting from a competitor, instead of just immediately recycling them, but the speeds here can't be matched for what I pay today.   I'll give it another week and then take the "signing bonus" if things don't improve.

Thanks so much for replying dlewisnsx.

All this time I've been wondering if my modem was having some type of software issue that would trigger it to download like this. Now it seems to be another problem on Cox's side.

Well, although I've seen the drop of download speeds in the past (perhaps it was only me), I'm starting to think that the drop of 4 channels is contributing directly to the loss of download speeds on peak times.
