I was away from home. Computer, tv all turned off. Yet I used more data than I ever have. I think someone is hacking into my computer.

I left home on January 10 early in the morning hours. Turned off all devices. Locked my door. I usually dont look but I got my bill in the email. Saw the new data useage and checked it out. On Jan 12 it says I used 1.5 GB; on Jan 13 almost 4.0 GB; Jan 14, 15 and 16th is small amount. I came home on 18th. Have been online and showing very minimal data useage. How is that possible? Use 4,0 GB and no one be home?

Hi libragirl,

That would seem a bit odd to me as well if I were in your shoes.  Do you have a wireless router connected at your home?  It could be that your neighbors are using your connection.  If you do not have a secure router, I would recommend setting a password for the router.  If you already have one in place you should change it, we can check things from our end as well.  Please email us at cox.help@cox.com with your account information and your user ID , we'll look into this for you.

Hi DerrickW,

Have similar problem as libragirl.  I have been a cox internet user for years, hardly having any data usage.  All of a sudden in November I start maxing out my data usage.  Some days over 20 gig.  We got netflix recently, and my family does use computer a bit, tablets, etc., but wow this is quite a jump!  You say you can check it out?  On some days when no one is here, and we are still showing 10 gig.  How much data does a netflix movie use in HD?

Could be as much as 7GB per hour for HD if in MPEG2. Less for MPEG4, depending on utilization.

Hi Roadkill,

Domino is correct. Downloading in HD can take up to 6 times more bandwidth than SD. Netflix offers methods of managing how much data you use while viewing programs. Try chaning the default HD quality from 1080p to 720p and see how that affects your data usage for a month. Also, be sure to change the settings on each device that you use to stream Netflix and other videos (TV, PC, tablets, etc.)

And don't forget to check to ensure that your home network is secure so that others can't access your network without your permission. The other factors that can impact your data usage include any automatic applications running on your devices, updates such as McAfee, Microsoft Office, or ITunes, or possibly even a virus. We can help you rule out all possibilities!

Hi Becky,

Is there a way of finding out what is using the data, or when it is being used?  That would help a lot.

@roadkill

That isn't something we check from this end.  There may be network analyzer tools you can try using to see what sort of traffic is passing on your network.  Wireshark is one that comes to mind however it does require a bit of specialized knowledge to understand what you're seeing.
