I can receive but cannot send mail on my mac

It seems as though I am clearly not the first person with this problem but what is different is that I have spoke to Cox on two separate occasions and have checked my settings to be told that it must be a Mac problem.  I have spoke with Mac support and they have checked the settings that Cox gave me.  Mac support said that if all the ports, etc. are entered as Cox gave them to me and the mail won't send that it sounds like a server problem.  After speaking to both ends and hearing them blame each other, what Mac is telling me makes more sense.  Also, why would it randomly decide to send sometimes but not others?  I would think that if the settings were wrong, it wouldn't work  ANY of the time.  It's random when I can send and when I cannot.  Cox support asked me to send an email to myself from webmail, which works MOST of the time - but lately that doesn't even work!

The error message I receive varies from unable to connect to the server to maybe I am sending too many emails (really?? - is there a limit of 3 per hour??)

I don't have any issues with any other mail programs running on my computer and have set up a gmail account for the sole purpose of responding to emails, which is ridiculous.  I would rather use my cox email as I have had that email address for at least 15 of the 20 loyal years to Cox.  However, I am so frustrated that I am to the point of changing internet providers.

Please try to catch one of the error messages and post again.  Depending on the error received there could be a few different things going on here.

Chris,  Thanks for your reply.

The crazy thing is that the error message varies.  Yesterday when the email failed, the message was that the SMTP server rejected the password.

This morning  at 9:37, I sent an email no problem but about 5 minutes later, it failed to send an email and the error message was that connections to the server smtp.cox.net timed out.

The most confusion aspect is that whether it sends an email or not is random and the error messages changes.

I would suggest trying to remove the SMTP server from Mac Mail and reconfiguring as per these instructions to see if that helps:

Chris,

I tried the above but still cannot send.  I didn't delete the entire mail account as I didn't want to lose my messages but I did remove the smtp server and configure it again.

If you change the outgoing port number to 25 and disable SSL and set password authentication to none does it continue to give the offline message?

Edward,

I have a screen shot of the change to port 25 and the other instructions.  This time it gives me a different error message - go figure!  I have placed a screen shot of the error message below.  Did I do something wrong?

"Too Many Bad Commands" means something from that IP address is getting SMTP login failures or otherwise behaving badly with the outgoing mail server. Seeing that made me think to check some security info and sure enough there's a slew of bad SMTP logins alternating between your home IP and a myvzw.com IP.

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing you have a Verizon phone that's set to connect to your home wifi when available, and it's trying to send a message but has incorrect SMTP account settings (password changed recently?) so it's hammering the server.

Thanks.  What you said about that particular error message made sense.  My husband suggested we change our cox account password to the old password because he felt that the problems happened after we changed passwords.  I changed it on my mac and my phone but forgot his phone.  I changed it on his phone and was able to receive.  I waited 1.5 hours and tried to send a test and was successful.  We didn't change any of the smtp settings on the phones.

I am hoping this is a fix instead of one of the sporadic times that it does send email.  In the meantime, thank you so much for your help.  I hope we have solved this.  If not, I will talk to you soon.

P.S.  I hope you get paid significantly more than tech support by phone as I feel like there's someone on the other end trying to help with more knowledge!!
