We recently got an 'updated' modem thru COX & now I am constantly getting a 'blocked' message -

This IP has been automatically blocked. If you have questions, please email: *****************

Would like to rectify this problem!

hi TiffanyR, it seems like it's the other way around, Craigslist is blocking my COX IP, I just hung up with Danny at COX Support a few minutes back, my IP address is listed thru RI when I'm in CT(68.9.56.87), with 100s to 1000s of COX customers & according to him there is NO way to change it thru COX! He suggested to search some YouTube videos to change it somehow or buy a VPN service! We did not have this problem before COX 'upgraded' our modem a week or so ago!

It is a 'newer' style modem/ router combo so I can't do that

I'm gonna shut down my computer for a bit, we have a bad thunderstorm moving in I'll check back after it passes thru!

Thanks

Cox uses DHCP to assign a dynamic IP address to your network.  When you upgraded your modem to a gateway you received a new address.  The previous "owner" of that address probability violated Craigslist's Terms of Usage and got that IP blocked.  The only way to solve this is to force a new IP address, Tiffany's suggestion of connecting you computer directly to your modem would work but you can't with a gateway.  Changing the MAC address will force DHCP to change the assigned IP address.  With a gateway I'm not sure how to do it.  Maybe keeping it unplugged for an hour or so will force a new address.  Anyone from Cox know how to force an IP update when using a gateway?  If you Google this issue with Craigslist, you will find many posts ... must be a fairly common issue.

I would say its the best way to solve the problem, but not quite the only way. If its just for one site, try a HTTP proxy. Once you have access to the site, you can just create another account which registers the new IP.

It depends on the gateway. What model does OP have? Most don't have the option to change the WAN MAC address, but you still have options. Someone from Cox can "unprovision" the gateway, which should lock it with a 172.x.x.x IP. You won't be online until they provision you again, but when they do, it "should" be a new IP. **Note** This will have repercussions if the gateway is a phone, internet, wifi model. Basically it will reset your voicemail to default, if you have voicemail. The keeping the gateway unplugged "can" work, but it depends on a number of factors; length on the IP lease, rotation of the DHCP pool, and demand on DHCP renewals.

If you create a new account via a proxy, wouldn't you have to use the proxy for all future Craigslist activity?  If you go back to your original Cox IP, I believe Craigslist will IP block you again.

Thanks for the discussion ... and welcome back Health Edge.  This is just another reason for separate modems and routers
