How would I connect a separate phone to my Cable modem?

We have the premium phone service and our main phone system (if you will) is a typical cordless with several handsets. We have a wall mount phone like the one in the attached photo that we'd like to add. I recall our install technician stating that a second phone/system could not be used but he didn't elaborate. Looking at the back of the modem though, there is a port to connect a second line so I don't understand why I can't add that wall mounted phone. If you believe it's possible, what steps/devices do we need to add it?

Here is an illustration of the back of the modem:

Here's the wall mount phone we need to add:

I assume you current cordless phone is connected directly into port 1.  Does you home have working phone wiring and is your wall phone connected to the internal wiring?  If so, you may need a phone splitter like this.  You would connect the male end to a working wall jack, your cordless phone to one jack and run a wire from port 1 on  the modem to the other jack.  Again, this assumes you have working internal phone wiring.  If any of my assumptions are incorrect, please post more details about your installation.

Yes the wall-mounted phone (which we used for many years with Verizon) had been connected with internal wiring to a box in the basement that goes outside (it's still wired to that old Verizon box).

Can you elaborate a bit more? I apologize...I just got a bit confused by the instructions.

And yes, the cordless system is currently in port 1.

1. Disconnect any line going outside.  You don't want you internal wiring to remain connected to anything outside.  There may still be voltage on the external line which will cause problems.

2. Find another wall jack that is also connected the the box in the basement.  If  you have 2 wall jacks available, see alternate below.

3, Plug the phone splitter into the wall jack.

4. Plug your cordless phone into one jack on the splitter, plug a wire going from the other splitter jack to your modem.

Alternately, if you have 2 wall jacks connected to the box in the basement you can plug your cordless phone into one and a wire from the modem into the other.
