Gateways vs. modem & router

What are the pros & cons of a gateway modem versus separate modem & router? I'm not very tech savvy so I'm looking for ease of set up and use. Price is also a consideration but i see there are modems and routers that are, together in my price range. Any suggestions? Recommendations?

With a gateway you will get a convenience benefit of having both devices in one as well as offloading a degree of the device management to the ISP.  In doing so you'll have a little less control of the device features.  Cost is comparable however we do also have the option to rent gateways if you won't want a large expense right away.
