External Hard Drive for 8642HDC

Is there something that needs to be done to activate the esata on my 8642HDC?  I tried connecting a 2TB external drive and I got the message asking if I wanted to format and I answered yes and it seemed to format and the box restarted but I'm still unable to access the drive or save programs to it.  Does anyone know why the drive is still not accessible after formatting?
