I'm having the same issue. Set an event timer for channel 1027 and when timer hits it changes to channel 27. Receiver model is Motorola DCX3200-M.

Problem still persists. Any way around this?

Are you able to tune to channel 1027? If so, do you get an error message or icon? What city do you live in?

Yes, the channels work fine. But, when I set an event timer for that channel (the HD one), when the timer changes the channel it always goes to the SD version.
I live in Tulsa, OK.

Auto-tune to HD is on. I've never touched that setting as I was completely unaware of it. If it is supposed to automatically switch to an HD channel when there is one available when selecting an SD channel it has never worked.

I just tested this again using a different channel. Here are the sequence of events:
Watching a program on channel 1027.
Set an event timer for channel 1026.
One minute before the timer changes the channel the banner pops up on the screen that a timer is upcoming. The banner says event is starting on channel 26.
After one minute the timer changes the channel to 26, not 1026. The output on the front of the receiver when it changed the channel was 26.
I've recreated this scenario on numerous channels. The event timer will not utilize the new HD channels. It always defaults to the SD channel.

On the front of the receiver, the video output should be lit. It will be 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i. Let me know which one you get when it auto tunes.

As stated above, this is a Motorola DCX3200-M. The only information available on the front of the box is the time or channel, and a power indicator.

I'd double check that info. The DCX3200 has a time/channel readout? Or is yours the P2?

I'm just reading what is on the box itself. Here is a pic:
