Email Storage

I have used my cox.net account for three years (at least) and have left emails stored online for later reference.

For some reason all my emails prior to August 8, 2014 are missing. It's not an issue of storage space - my storage of emails is only at 4%.

Where did my emails go? Did they get archived? or am I just screwed?

It looks like from here you may have setup a POP3 email client program on one of your devices at home to check your email.  When a device uses POP3 protocol to access your mailbox on the server it deletes the contents after retrieving them as per whatever rules it was setup with.  I'd suggest checking all of your computers or devices and you'll probably find all of your emails on one of them.
