Digital Cable TV Scrambling at Night

Hello,

I have been having the following issues with our TV service.  Now that its getting cooler in Phoenix, AZ at night all of our channels start to scramble after 9pm and then gets even worse after 1am to the point you cannot even watch TV.  I have reset all all the boxes by powering them off and waiting for them to reboot.  That does nothing but as soon as the day comes around the tv works fine.  I am just wanting to get some solution of what the issue might be.  I am seriously considering cancelling my TV service cause the send tech our and find nothing but techs don't work overnight.  These are the boxes we currently have, not sure if I should have them swapped out first as they are old.

You'll have to better describe what is happening to the video. "Scramble" isn't very descriptive.

BTW, those receivers were built 10-13 years ago.

When I say scrambling I mean we get constant tilling on the screen as well as missing or garbled voices.  Some of the channels also go completely scrambled in which the screen has green tiles.  This only happens at night.

I am in Phoenix. I had the same problem (using a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR at the time .... i now have a Contour box).  The Cox repairman said that it can be fixed at the pedestal down the street.  Certain channels are affected more. I was having troubles with the non-HD channels. Cox inspected the pedestal and the problem went away.

The repairman asked me to tell him the exact channels and the exact times so he could track the signal overnight. I think he said that someone actually goes out at 2am to check the pedestal.

Hi Chrisb23,

It certainly isn't much fun to watch TV when the picture keeps breaking up, and I apologize that you've been dealing with this. Tiling is very often indicative of a signal issue and is a common symptom when the signal to the cable box isn't as strong as it needs to be. This could be from something as simple as a loose connection, to a dying splitter (internal or external), or to something outside your house completely--in our equipment. While not seen frequently, receivers can also be the source of tiling.

Has the tiling continued in the evenings since your original post? If so, I'd like to make sure we take a closer look for you. As in Yak's example, the source of the problem could be coming from somewhere else on your street or in your neighborhood!

Had a tech out last week and he tightened some connection at the street and then opened up a ticket with maintenance about my missing channels.  All finally got resolved on Sunday.
