I live in an apartment complex. When I switched my landline phone from AT&T two Cox techniciams came over and worked outside my aparment and after 15 minutes they came back and told me my phone service had been switched over. This was 5 years ago and they did nothing inside my aparment. Whatever they did was outside, probably in one of those green round Cox pods or whatever they call them. On May 24th, 2014 my landline could not get a dial tone. Callers receive a "network difficulty" message when they call my number. Cox sent a technician out on Sunday the 25th and he told me he has no idea how they hooked my phone up and I would have a get a phone modem installed inside my apartment next to my computer. I don't want that. I shut my computer down and pull the plug out of the wall every day day I go to work because my dog has had a history of chewing electrical cords. I don't want to come home and find her dead. I think there must be some type of network interface installed downstairs that has failed and I want that replaced. I don't want my phone to be dependent on a modem that I might have to power off. In other words, I want my service back the way it was before. Why can I not get that?

Well, since the modem would be plugged into the surge suppressor that I unplug whenever I leave home, for my dog's safety, the phone will stop working and if anyone calls when I am not home, I won't get the message. So this is unacceptable to me. if this is the best Cox can do, I will seek phone service elsewhere, if that is possible.

Surely you don't unplug everything. What about your refrigerator or dryer? They might even be able to work out a location in your garage or attic or put it inside a locked housebox if your concerned. I don't understand why you can't have it in another room and close the door.

I'll deal with it somehow. I live in an apartment so my options are limited. When I come home and am ready to go online I plug the surge suppressor in and my internet cable modem comes back online. I guess that the phone modem would do the same thing. I'll give anyone who needs to reach me when I'm not home my cell phone number.

I don't unplug my DVR because it wouldn't record any shows I wanted to record while I'm not home but I have all that blocked so she can't get to the power cables at all. I can't do that with the internet/computer modem because of where it's located. Apt complex does not allow additional holes to be drilled into walls. So I'll just unplug it when I'm not home and see what happens. Technician from Cox is supposed to come tomorrow morning and I'll see what he says.

It turns out it was not the network interface at all. The technician who came on May 29th found the problem outside. Someone had messed with the Cox equipment and he was able to restore the service without installation of a phone modem in my apartment. He did say that when the interface eventually failed I would have to convert over to an in-apartment modem like all new customers. So the phone is working like it did before without any need for a phone modem I didn't want.
