COX NOTIFICATION BOX APPEARS ON WALLPAPER WITHOUT POPUP, BROWSER, OR EMAIL BOXES

When I start my computer or login to the computer when idle or after rebooting I get a Cox Notification Box that says: Sorry but the website popup.carbonite.com cannot be located.  I am running Windows 7 64 bit with Cox High Speed Internet, and yes I have Carbonite installed on my computer.  I have contacted Carbonite and they recommended re installation of Carbonite, but I still get this problem.  I have ESET Internet Security 5, and I have not given any exception to allow this "popup."  This "popup" is coming to my desktop thru Cox, and it is not coming thru my email. There is no browser window open when I receive this notification; it just appears on my desktop.  Both IE 9 and Firefox 16 have popup blockers turned on. Many virus scans run with ESET, Malewarebytes and Ad-Aware- nothing shows up. It is like a mysterious browser searched on Cox for popup.carbonite.com, and Cox just left the unable to locate site box on my computer wallpaper without any browser window???    Can anyone help?

It sounds like the popup actually is a browser window being loaded by Carbonite.  Do you have any ad-blocking software installed on your PC?  This may be the source of the pop-up:

Thanks Chris.   I shall further investigate Carbonite as the source of the popup.  I have the antimalware contained in ESET Internet Security running actively on my computer.  I also run Ad-Aware and Malewarebytes Antimalware as scans monthly.  I never get anything but cookies, and I never see anything related to Carbonite.  This Cox Notification Box is hardly ever there also.  It is just that this has been going on for 2 years now.  It may appear every couple of months just sitting on my wallpaper when I log on in the morning.  It is almost as if I searched on Cox for popup.carbonite.com somehow without using my browser in the middle of the night.  There is nobody else who has access to my computer.

Also, the Sorry we cannot find box is not the same as the ad in your reply; it is from Cox not Carbonite.

What is it you're seeing that suggests it's coming from Cox?  From what you described so far it sounds like it's just a browser pop-up but I haven't seen anything to indicate where it's coming from.

I wish I could send you my screenshot.  It is from Cox.  Box with the COX logo at the top.  It says "Sorry, the website popup.carbonite.com cannot be found.  It just floats over the wallpaper on my desktop.  There is no browser interface present like I get when I search for it on IE9 or Firefox.  The box also says down lower Search Powered by Yahoo and gives a number of search results within the box.   I do not use Yahoo, and I never search on Yahoo.    Thanks.

I think I understand now.  That would be a brower pop up window.  You're seeing cox because you're using the default DNS servers and getting search results because the site the pop up is looking for cannot be found.  The browser is opening because something on the PC end is causing it to pop up.  You might want to check with some PC support resources to see where start up items can be hidden and see if something is there causing this pop up to appear.
