Cox Contour 3.1.2.0 Error Message

Keep getting this when I connected the COX DVR yesterday. Happens a lot on some channels and little or not at all on others. Was on the phone with COX Tech Support for about an hour last night. Before I was connecting the cable directly to my own DVRs with digital and analog receivers. Had the cable split 3 ways. Never had problems watching/recording digital or analog until I connected the COX DVR. Even removed the 3 way split and connected the same cable directly to the COX DVR. Did not solve the problem. COX is sending me a new DVR to see if that fixes it. Know that the problem is not the cable or connection since it worked fine before. Must be the box or the new system COX is switching to.

Hi Klaatu,

Error 3.1.2.0 tells us the problem is related to Switched Digital Video (SDV) channels and points us in the direction of the signal levels getting to the DVR. If it is a signal strength issue, and bypassing the splitter didn't solve the problem, a service call may be needed. Please let us know what happens after you receive and connect the new DVR. We want you to be able to enjoy all of your Cox Advanced TV services!

I never got the DVR. After seeing it happen for a while, I believe the problem is the signal on some channels like you said. Before I got your DVR, I would have occasional messed up pixilation when using the digital receiver in my DVR.just like I still do with yours. The splitter just made things a lot worse with your DVR, so I removed it. Just happens on two or three channels which is a lot seeing I only watch less than a dozen of the channels that I get. Unfortunately I have to pay for the hundreds of channels I do not watch in order to have your DVR since mine does not work on your system anymore. What would make me happy is a way to disable that annoying bad signal message that started when I had to start using your DVR. What would make me ever happier is to be able to use your DVR with your starter pack. About all I watch is 4-9, FX, SYFY, HIST and the news channels. As a FYI. Seems to happen the most (a lot) on A&E and USA. Do not know about the others. I do not watch them. Thanks.

After more thought, I could send Gort over to solve the problem if you would like.

@klaatu,  Gort would be the worst solution for fixing things. You will need a Cox technician.  But i recently learned that there is a $75 charge for a visit from a tech. I called Cox to verify this and they said yes.  So try to keep troubleshooting with telephone support which is free. Then take the DVR to a Cox store which is also free to get a replacement.

I wish there was a place at Cox where we could decipher the Error Codes on the DVR's.  The message always says to "reference code 3.1.1 when calling Cox" but the tech people don't seem to care about that number very much.... they just start checking the signal strength.

klaatu,

It seems you've already tried to check your connections, therefore Yak is likely right and you would need a service call. Please note, If the issue is with Cox-owned equipment or is outside of your home, there will be no charge for a service call. If the issue is with interior wiring or connections (like internal splitters), there is the possibility of a fee. We do have a service plan you can subscribe to if the issue is with internal wiring: http://bit.ly/1CdUT1R  Please email us at cox.help@cox.com & include your full name, address and link to your forums post in the email so we can proceed.
