Correctables / UnCorrectables: What is considered "acceptable" ?

Hi,

So i have had Cox for 7 months or so....Installed last Sep after my home was just built brand new.mCox was the ONLY service i got installed (did not get DirectTV or anything else if this matters for this post)

I originally purchased the single band (2.4 only) Ubee modem/router. I has issues with internet right off the bat....conenction drops...modem rebooting its self randomly. I have had Cox out here 4-5 times to "fix" issues with lines and the TAP out in the street.

So I first started noticing all these UnCorrectables (on all 8 downstream channels) in the Ubee modem and just passed it off as "im going to buy a dual band modem/router asap because i hated the limited options the Ubee had for my specific home network".

Yesterday i purchased a Netgear C6300 (so far love the device) and worked with Cox to get it setup over the phone. Took a bit longer than expected but for it all running.

This AM i decided to poke around the details of my connection and i have 16 downstream channels now (yippie) but am still seeing tons of Correctables / UnCorrectables.

Am i being pushed around and not getting the service I pay for with these signals? I work from home and my boss always says he gets "low bandwidth" alerts from my VoIP office line. (I got these on the Ubee as well)

Here is a snap of my Down and Up channels from the Netgear C6300

Thanks!

I now get 15,000 uncorrectables a day with an SB 6141. It started last Fall after Cox did some work on their infrastructure here in the San Diego market. Something to do with the speed increase happening around that time. They probably contracted out the work like they do for us and they got bad service like we do.

Anyway, it appears to be the new normal. Funny thing is that it all happens at night, when I'm asleep and not using the internet. I can check it at midnight, go to sleep, wake up in the morning and check it first thing and there they are. When it started they told me it was because they do maintenance at night. Every night for the past nine months is a lot of maintenance.

My signal levels are all below 5, +/- 1,  on the downstream with SNR a rock solid 38 across all channels. Your downstream go from 4.4 to 9.9 with SNR from 35.5 to 37.6. Something's up there. Check all of your wiring, inside and out, for frayed wires and loose connectors.

If all else fails you'll have to call the dreaded Cox customer service line and set up a service call for them, or someone purporting to be them, to come out and fix what was more than likely their mistake in the first place. While simultaneously telling you whatever they found was your fault and charging you $60 to boot.

djvelocitee, The signal levels as far as having two sets bonding is more then enough for the tier of service, one of the 4 sets seems to be showing out of range but would have no effect on the overall speed for the modem from our logs, and what you are posting there. The uncorrectables may be tying into that if the signals are fluctuating but would not cause speed issues themselves and are cumulative if the modem is left on so to get them to reset to 0 the modem would have to be reset as well.

What type of speeds are you getting when you test it online?

I get good speeds right now (7amET test, laptop plugged directly into modem)

I am more curious if my quality is hit or miss. I have not had any VoIP phone issues in the past 48hrs or had my modem magically reset its self. I am weary though.

Thanks!

The OP's question was, "Correctables / Uncorrectables: What is considered  "acceptable"?

Tagged as "The Answer" was one speed test and going two days without the modem resetting itself.

My signals are fine, my speeds are fine, and my modem never resets itself. Yet I still get around 15,000 uncorrectables a day, every day.

Is Cox's interpretation of Internet speed how fast you can resend packets because of your inability to send undamaged ones in the first place?

Hi Jerry,

I saw your post in regards to the issues you're having with your connection.  If you would like for us to look into the issue that you're having please email us your account information at cox.help@cox.com.  Having a tech come out to check the environment is not such a bad idea, if necessary they would be able to create a ticket to escalate to our Field Maintenance team.  Have you had someone out to troubleshoot recently?
