Connection Issues

I have been having multiple connection issues and really would like to know if I need a new modem(Currently: Motorola SB5101U) or if its more likely something else.

First the speeds range a lot, I did 4 speed tests and got

65ms 6.08 down 3.44 up

72ms 13.89 down 5.60 up

83ms 14.58 down 6.11 up

62 ms 8.76 down 4.79 up

Secondly, I lose connection several times throughout the day and it requires me to unplug and reset the modem.These are the modem logs, I only omitted the MAC Address.

An Ethernet problem would be a problem with the connection between the modem and the device connected to it.  Problems could include a problem with the jack on the modem, a problem with the jack on the device connected to it, or possible a problem with the cord itself.  You can try either using a different cord or perhaps connecting a different device to troubleshoot.  If the Ethernet down/up events persist in the modem logs with a different cord and device connected it would suggest the problem lies with the modem.

Speeds will fluctuate greatly on the higher tiers of service when used with a 2.0 modem which is why 3.0 modem are required for new customers signing up for Preferred or higher.  For that reason alone you'd see benefits by upgrading.  I'm also seeing numerous Ethernet down/up event pairs in those logs that don't correlate with modem restarts suggesting there might also be an intermittent Ethernet connection problem as well.

You can usually do an online self-activation in most situations.  ONce the new modem syncs with the network  you'll be automatically be re-routed to the self-activation page when trying to access the web.  Enter the requested info and you should be good.  If you have a wireless router connected during this process it'll also need to be restarted to prevent being re-routed back to the self-activation page.

Purchase and installed a new modem yesterday. I went with the Zoom 5341J because it had a lot of good reviews and few bad ones. So far no interrupts and speeds seem more consistent.
