Ch. 9 WGN on TV starter service removed from line-up?

I was able to receive WGN this morning, but this afternoon a pop-up stated I needed a subscription to view this channel.  After I ran a channel scan Ch. 9 was no longer listed in the guide.  Has it been removed from the TV starter package?  You should not remove a channel without adding one.  The starter service is already not much more than free channels like QVC, HSN, C-Span and the like.  There are few enough entertainment channels on the Starter package, but some of us cannot afford premium service.  If Ch. 9 was removed for technical reasons, I apologize for the flame.[:).  In any event, please provide an explanation for this action.

just chatted with cox support.  He said that it was removed to improve market bandwidth and that WGN is going HD.  I asked if it was going to be replaced but did not get a definite answer.  Just another example of the poor (Starter Service) getting poorer and the rich (Expanded Tier) getting richer...

Hi Bigmac,

WGN moved from TV Starter to the TV Essential channel lineup. The Cox channel lineup is always growing! As we continue to add HD channels, analog channels are removed so that we can maximize bandwidth across our network. View your entire lineup at www.cox.com/content/dam/cox/residential/documents/tv/channel-lineup/fla_ga/cl_georgia.pdf.

Channel 23 was my WGN and basically the ONLY CHANNEL I watched as it was the ONLY CHANNEL with anything TO watch on the STARTER PKG. I am FURIOUS! Now all there is on this pkg is INFO- MERCIALS, NEWS, SPORTS, SHOPPING, CHURCH, DOCUMENTARIES and 50 YEAR OLD SHOWS!!!!!!! REALLY! I called Cox and was told that they ARE NOT REPLACING the channel with a different one! BUT!!!! they also did not lower the price since they removed one of the main channels we were paying for. I have been a Cox customer for over 20 YEARS and this is how we are rewarded for our loyalty. I CANNOT AFFORD the the higher pkgs. and this is leaving me very disgruntled. Technology is only leaving the lower income, (and I work full time and a single mother), with even LESS! Television is basically my only form of entertainment and now I don't even have that.

Becky, you know this is double-speak, right? You can't say that your "channel lineup is always growing" when the complaint is that Cox, again, removed a channel (that was a popular, go-to channel for many of us). Ever since I began Cox service in 2010, you have repeatedly taken away access to channels--even while increasing our monthly charge. Do you see the problem? This is why so many of us hate cable companies. If your customers want access to a channel that we have been paying to have access to, why not really be customer-service oriented and return the channel.

Becky, before I start please know that this is not a personal attack on you. What you stated in your post is telling me that soon the STARTER pkg. customers will soon have NO channels. We shouldn't be punished because we can't afford the higher tiers. I don't see how Cox can even call the STARTER pkg a PACKAGE at all. There is absolutely nothing to watch with the pathetic channels on the line up. Really, who wants to watch Lawrence Welk, 50 year old Westerns, constant church, sports and news....and worse yet, all of the shopping, governmental and Infomercial channels. I would challenge all of the higher-ups at Cox to try and find ANYTHING to watch, especially on Saturday or Sunday. Since WGN was yanked from the STARTER customers, (and I was told you will not be replacing it with another channel), why do we have to continue paying for it while the customers on the higher tier are enjoying having it added for FREE! Cable companies need to realise that the lower income customers are just as important as the higher income and should get something decent for what they pay for, too. After all, TELEVISION is sometimes ALL we have for entertainment for ourselves and our children. We feel like we are being forced to upgrade to something we absolutely CAN NOT AFFORD.

Here I sit on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon with absolutely NOTHING TO WATCH on this STARTER PKG! I understand that us lower income subscribers have to do without 99% of the popular channels, but this is just pathetic. Now that COX has removed WGN from our lineup it isn't even worth turning the television on....Especially on the weekend. I just feel that COX should find at least one or two decent channels that show movies, (that aren't 30-50 years old), to put on the Starter pkg. TAKE OFF SOME OF THESE BLASTED SHOPPING, GOVERNMENTAL, PAID PROGRAMMING AND INFO-MERCIAL channels!!! These channels make up at least 80% of this pkg. Your goal should be to try and provide satisfactory service for ALL of your customers and not just the upper income group. I have been with COX for over 30 years and feel that my loyalty means nothing. WIth the cost of these MINI and HD boxes added to our biils it is impossible to afford to move up to the next pkg.  The next level pkg would cost $31.00, but then you have to rent the HD boxes that cost 8.95 per T.V....plus taxes and fees. This brings the bill to approx. $60+ depending on how many boxes you need. I approximated with 2 boxes. OUR PAYCHECKS DO NOT GO UP BECAUSE YOUR SERVICE DOES! I cannot afford social entertainment and depend on television to occupy my time. PLEASE consider revising the lineup for the starter pkg. for the less fortunate viewers (Without increasing the price)!!
