Authentication Failure

I am having problems using my alias account which is ***@cox.net through my gmail. It worked perfectly for the last couple of years and then just stopped. I get this message: "Delivery incomplete. There was a temporary problem delivering your message to ....The response from the remote server was:454 4.7.0 ... authentication failure : try again later". 

So I deleted the "send as" email address in my gmail settings and then tried to add it back to see if that helped. Now I can't even do that. I keep getting this message. 
Authentication failed. Please check your username/password.
Server returned error: "454 4.7.0 ... authentication failure : try again later code(454) "

I've read a lot of these posts and I think I have really tried everything. My password is correct (yes, I've used it to sign in at Cox.net) and I've tried my user name with and without the @cox.net.  "smtp.cox.net" is correct and I've tried both SSL 465 and TLS 587. As per another of these posts I've tried doing it through an incognito window.

I really need help, please!!! Thanks.

Thanks for confirming you can sign into cox.com. Are you able to send and receive email from our myemail.cox.net website? Also, https://www.cox.com/residential/support/imap-server-settings.html is a link to our website with the IMAP server information.

I'm trying to add my Cox email as an alias in gmail.  I get the same error.  Cox webmail works fine.  I'm using the right password.  I've tried "smtp.cox.net" and "smtp.west.cox.net".

The solution for me was to turn off my security code or distorted text in my google account.

After that, gmail could authenticate properly to smtp.cox.net.
