Add wifi connection to ethernet

I am currently using a wired Ethernet connection for a desktop PC and I am satisfied with it. I would like to add a wifi tablet. is it possible to add a wifi router to a wired connection? I do not want to lose my wired connection for the desktop, but I want to be able to add a wifi device (my tablet is a MS Surface RT so it doesn't accept an Ethernet cable).
