How often should you reset or unplug your box? My friend treats his contour box like a computer and reboots it daily or right before watches something. Especially in HD. Necessary or not?

If the box is one of the newer voice-remote enabled boxes, it will reboot itself everyday anyways for updates and general preventative maintenance (during the overnight hours by default).
